ROSEVILLE, California — Zane Lovelace, Jr. drove the #46 West Coast Transmissions Chevrolet to a strong sixth place finish in the season-opening "SPEARS Manufacturing 125" for the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour at Stockton 99 Speedway on Saturday night.
The former NASCAR Western Late Model racer has several wins at the historic quarter-mile asphalt. He started out the weekend eighth fastest in combined Friday practice but less than a tenth off of quick-time.
Crew Chief Ty Joiner dialed in the #46 car for Saturday's qualifying session. Lovelace improved to third overall with a strong qualifying effort that put him on the outside-pole for the 125 lap race.
Lovelace fell back to the third spot early on but held off eventual race winner Jacob Gomes through lap 19. Lovelace then defended the fourth position ahead of Jim Pettit through lap 35.
Running fifth, Lovelace stayed ahead of veteran M.K. Kanke for many laps until things boiled over on lap 82. Kanke made contact with Lovelace going into turn three forcing Lovelace up towards the wall. Lovelace gathered the car up but also lost sixth to Jason Gilbert.
Lovelace dialed himself back in for the final 25 laps and managed to gain a positions when he avoided incidents in front of him. The solid sixth place finish gives Lovelace a good start to the 10 race tour with Madera Speedway on tap in just two weeks.
"All in all it was a decent night for our West Coast Transmission team," Lovelace said. "Qualifying third and bringing it home sixth is a good way to start the season off. My crew did an excellent job getting the car ready for the season opener at Stockton. We're ready for a solid run at Madera and continue our quest for Rookie of the Year!"
