ATHERTON, California — 21 year-old Nik Romano made the return to the NASCAR All American Modifieds with Ron Sutton’s Winner’s circle contesting a championship. Nik opened his 2012 season this past weekend at Stockton 99 Speedway with a solid run through the field as high as third place.
This is Romano’s fifth season in the Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle program, which develops drivers for a career in motorsports after an extensive application and tryout process. Romano joined the program in 2008 and has gained several championships and Rookie of the Year Honors.
Romano qualified eleventh out of a full field of 18 fast Modifieds and started eleventh in the 40 lap feature. Romano starting behind the fast qualifiers knew he needed to follow them through the field. From the drop of the green flag Romano picked off one position on lap 3 as well as four more by lap nine working into the sixth position. Keeping up with the fast qualifiers and eager to run down the leader, teammate Joey Licata Jr, Romano made impressive passes for the fifth position.
On lap 17, both Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle drivers were battling for the third position as the two drivers raced side by side. Following the side by side racing action, Romano found himself racing three wide with teammate Licata and another competitor in turn two however the three wide attempt pushed Romano back to the fourth position.
With a solid run in fourth a fellow competitor collided with Romano ending his night short suffering with a DNF. Romano not too discouraged will be back at it contending another solid run.
Next up for Nik Romano Racing will be the Tri Holiday Classic on May 26th at Stockton 99 Speedway.
