
MONROE, Washington — The holiday weekend doubleheader at the ‘Northwest Center of Racing’ Evergreen Speedway ‘the Super Speedway of the West’ is set to explode with plenty of racing and smashing-crashing action. On Saturday May 26 we kick off the weekend with the Speedway Chevrolet NASCAR Whelen All American Series Super Late Models in the I-5 Challenge Twin 50’s. The fast night of racing will include the west coast’s fastest figure eights the NASCAR Super Figure Eights, the Les Schwab Tires NASCAR Street Stocks and the WMRA (Washington Midget Racing Association). On Sunday May 27 the annual Memorial Day Weekend Demolition Derby and Fireworks Extravaganza featuring a Big Car Derby, Powder Puff Derby, Boat Races, all new Bed Races, Buzz Inn Steakhouse Stinger 8’s and Interstate Batteries Hornets. Both nights’ activities start at 6pm.
Twin 50-lap mains on the 3/8-mile paved oval are scheduled for the Super Late Models. This will be the second time out for the Late Model racers in the inaugural season of the I-5 Challenge. The challenge is between racers from South Sound Speedway and Evergreen Speedway. Current leader for the I-5 Challenge championship is Kelly Mann who is fresh off a win at SSS. Current point leader for the Evergreen Speedway NASCAR championship Naima Lang will be vying to add two more wins to his two that he won on opening night at his home track. There will be many others on hand all very capable of winning are Tom Hughs, Daniel Moore, Jeff Knight, Shane Sawin, Doug Davidson and Andy Sole to mention a few. Making her debut at Evergreen Speedway will be Jessica Dana the 17 year old will be joined by Evergreen’s 16 year old Molly Helmuth. This will mark another first at the 57 year old speedway with two women starting a Super Late Model race.
Jake Repin is leading the chase for the 2012 NASCAR Super Figure Eight championship heading into their fourth week of racing. Hot on Repin’s tail is Steve Peters. These two are long time competitors of figure eight racing. Last year’s champion Bryan Gunderson is third in points and the latest winner. In the previous three races there have been three different winners of the very competitive division feature events. Besides Gunderson, Peters has got to victory stage as has fourth in points Mike Middleton. Their main on Saturday will be for 50-laps.
The top three in points for the Street Stock division title are getting to be regulars to the podium. Leader Jim Foti has one win and two seconds to start the season while second in points Kenny Erickson has a second and a third in his three starts. Steve Ptacek started the season with a win. On week two a mechanical problem had him finishing well down in the field. Last week Ptacek recovered for a second win moving up in the points to third. The Street Stock Main is scheduled for 30-laps.
WMRA will make their first of four visits to Evergreen this Saturday. Point leader Evan Margeson will try to follow his season opening win at South Sound Speedway with a win on the 3/8-mile. Troy Globe, Kris McKenzie and Ray Jones round out the top four in points heading into the second race of their early season. The open wheeled speed demons are scheduled for 30-laps.
Sunday May 27 day two of the holiday weekend doubleheader has the Stinger 8 division racing on the figure eight. Josh Young will be trying to make it two in row wins. Young in a new car took it to a win last week. Weeks one and two winner Sean Peters was not at last week’s race and is expected back on Sunday. The division has four women racers and two of them made podium visits last week. Jessica Gray has been on the podium twice this season with a third and a second. Nicole Pollard finished third last week. The other two women that are more than capable of being on the podium Joselyn LaFleur and Melissa Repin will try to make it a first time ever all woman podium.
Also on Sunday the Interstate Batteries Hornet division returns. Jaime Corbett is the current point leader by one point over 14 year old Chad Fitzpatrick who had his best ever finish in his young career a second last week. Josh LaPlante a 19-year old won his first race last week and is third in points. Fifty-two racers have taken points in the first four races of the 2012 season.
