AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Washington — There’s always plenty of unknowns when it comes to demolition derbies.
What will the killing blow be for the last man standing? Will it be a ram to the radiator that causes overheating or a crippling crash that knocks a wheel off the car? And then, can that car with three wheels win?
But when you add in what arguably might be the biggest purse – possibly in the history of local demos – with the last man standing taking home $3,000, and the runner-up $1,500 there’s no telling.
“To my knowledge, this is the biggest purse of any demo in the region...ever!,” promoter Brycen Tarr said.
The Big Car Demo Derby is part of a two-event weekend at SCR’s Super Oval and get underway Saturday at 6 p.m. Gates open at 5 with $5 admission seeing both the demo and Summit Series drag racing on the adjacent drag strip.
The weekend kicks off, however, on Friday with Zip’s Pony Stocks, Road Runners, Motion Auto Supply Bump 2 Pass cars. Again, admission is $5 with gates opening at 5 p.m.
“I am not sure on car count, but I have received calls from drivers as far away as Montana, Seattle, and Canada saying that they will be here,” Tarr said.
Tarr is sweetening the pot to entice even more competitors offering additional money, $100 each for Best Appearing, Most Aggressive and a heat race win.
Demo derbies are wildly popular with fans and Saturday’s event will probably be no different, but Tarr is also providing some additional perks for fans.
“We will also have a rollover contest and a car launching contest to see who can jump a car the farthest,” he said. Additionally, there will be an appearance by Mr. Dizzy who is making the trip over from Seattle to blow up a car while he is inside it.
“It should be a huge night of destruction,” Tarr said.
The Motion Auto Supply Bump 2 Pass class will be running a full show of dashes, heats, and mains.
