SONOMA, California — With a road course victory under their belt already this season, Utah's Michael Self and the Golden Gate Racing Team are more prepared than ever before for the upcoming weekend as they return to the wine country in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West at Sonoma. This weekend's Pick N Pull Racing to Stop Hunger is one of the most highly anticipated events on the series schedule, sharing the spotlight with the NASCAR Sprint Series as it makes its sole Northern California appearance.
"It's like a roller coaster, a ton of elevation change and it's very technical especially in these big, heavy stock cars. "— Michael Self
Entering the eighth event of the 15 race tour, Self is currently eighth in the NASCAR West point standings, 76-points from the top position held by Dylan Kwasniewski. With three top fives and victory to his name already this season, the 1.99 mile road course at Sonoma could very well lead Self and the Richard Childress supported Golden Gate Racing Team to another top finish as they set their sights on contending for the 2012 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship.
While many drivers on the tour dislike the road course events, Self is quite the opposite. After molding his young career in kart racing the Park City Utah resident is a driving instructor at Miller Motorsports Park and has a great deal of success when it comes to road course racing. So while many teams will be scratching their heads looking for that perfect line this weekend, Self will be running it and eying another series victory if everything goes their way in the Rockwell Watches-Bay Bio Diesel #21 Chevrolet.
"Sonoma has definitely become my favorite of all the tracks the West visits. I love the road courses and Sonoma ranks up there as the most fun track I've ever had the chance to drive" said Self. "It's like a roller coaster, a ton of elevation change and it's very technical especially in these big, heavy stock cars. We were super fast there last year until I got greedy and messed up a top 3 run. I'm really looking forward to making a come back this year fresh off a win at the most recent road course. "
Self will be aboard the same Chevrolet that he drove to victory in Brainerd last month. In addition being behind the wheel of a winning car, he will also be joined by a teammate with veteran driver Eric Norris of Dana Point in the Golden Gate Racing Team's #31 mount. Norris brings a great deal of success and talent to the team for the weekend and the duo is expected to be running up front when the checkered flag drops.
The annual race at Sonoma is always special for the Golden Gate Racing Team. Based in San Francisco, it is the home venue for the longtime organization and often a gathering place for their many sponsors and supporters. Among those in the GGRT garage this weekend will be Richard Childress who will take advantage of the opportunity to spend some time with his California team, something that isn't too common due to his busy national schedule.
"This is one of my favorite races of the year as I spend time with my California team and try to visit a couple of the area wineries," said Childress. Michael has proven to be a talented road racer and I'm really looking forward to watching the Golden Gate Racing Team and RCR perform this weekend."
Qualifying for Saturday's race will take place on Friday at 1:50 p.m. in Sonoma. The Golden Gate Racing Team is set to take the green flag on Saturday at 12:45.
