Sometimes it feels like racing is dead here in the West. Those in Southern California especially feel the pain -- Cajon Speedway, Orange Show Speedway, Mesa Marin Raceway, Irwindale Speedway either closed or not fully operational and that doesn't include all the cool little venues.
Now look at the photo. The picture of the stands in the top was from 2004. The photo below it was from last weekend, 8 years later.
Yes, it was the Bullring's Night of Fire, yes they had BigFoot crushing cars, but it shows you a good crowd can be had and it ain't over yet!
There are people working behind the scenes at both the new Kern County Raceway and the former Irwindale Speedway. The economy is hurting right now, but that didn't stop the promoters at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe (Wash.) from rounding up 39 cars for their Summer Showdown. That is a nice field.
Sure the local tracks may not be as full as we remember or car counts may not be as high; but, The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Evergreen Speedway have shown us that healthy car counts and full grandstands are still possible.
Don't give up on racing, it is still glowing, we all just need to "fan" the flames!
