DACON, Colorado — Utah's Michael Self and the Richard Childress Racing Driver Development supported Golden Gate Racing Team continued their forward push towards the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Championship last week with a top five finish at Colorado National Speedway. After their recent bridesmaid finish in Washington, Self and the Boys of the Bay came home fourth in the NAPA Auto Parts/Toyota 150 and will look to carry that momentum into Newton, Iowa this weekend as they compete in the Pork Be Inspired East West Combo at Iowa Speedway.
“Michael Self and this entire team are starting to show what GGRT/RCR is really made of,” said Jimi Z., owner of the Golden Gate Racing Team that carries the support of Richard Childress Racing based in Welcome, North Carolina. “Richard and I are proud of what this team has accomplished this season so far and look forward to what’s to come. We have a great driver, great equipment and the best crew I could ask for.”
Entering the Colorado event, Self made a strong showing in preliminary practices and backed it up with a solid fourth place run in qualifying. Self drove the Rockwell Watches-Golden Gate Meat Company #21 Chevrolet to a top speed of 79.847 miles per hour on the popular tight oval below the Rockies. The top run positioned him right behind the season’s top drivers for green flag with early season point leader Dylan Kwasniewski on the pole, current point leader and defending series champion Greg Pursley and series top runner David Mayhew who started on the inside of Self.
While Pursley took charge of the field and maintained the lead for the entire race, Self fought his way towards the front, first racing with Kwasnieski who faded back at the green flag and later in the race dueling with first year hot shoe Derek Thorn and Cameron Haley who charged around Self late in the race to steal the third position from Self after Self faded back following a bid for the lead that fell short. At the finish line Self finished an impressive fourth place to earn his fifth top five of the season and his sixth top ten finish.
“This was a really solid run overall, I’m really happy with the outcome and how we performed the whole day in Colorado. Now we can take this momentum into Iowa and get another top finish,” said Self. “ I tried to make that pass at the end of the race that would have given me a shot at the win and I ended up falling back because of it but that’s racing. I had to try it and I definitely learned from it.”
Following Saturday’s top run, Self has advanced to sixth in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series point standings. As the team heads into Iowa this weekend he looks to continue his quest towards the 2012 series title but must outwit Pursley in the coming weeks to do so.
“This team has been performing so well the last few weeks,” added Self. ‘We’ve turned our top five speeds into top five finishes. I’m excited to keep going with this season and push for another win.”
