YAKIMA, Washington — For the third consecutive summer Yakima Speedway will host a Cast Iron Nationals event for Winged Sprint Cars with several of the Northwest's best open-wheel drivers schedule to compete.
Leading the charge will be Tony Berry, Mike Fought and Justin Popple of the WESCO Sprint Car Series. Each driver cut their teeth on bullring quarter-mile tracks such as StateLine Speedway or Ephrata Raceway Park so the bigger Yakima half-mile is always a favorite for the trio.
Other regional Sprint Car drivers expected to the 3rd Annual Open Wheel Spectacular include Jeff Bird, Doug McLees, Rich Fast, Danny Mathews and Tom Beierman.
Also on the night's schedule will be the Vintage Modified Series and the West Coast Vintage Racer's Association featuring nostalgic midget race cars.
Frankie Volz Sr. leads the fan-favorite Vintage Racer's assembly of cars that take fans back to the 50's, 60's and 70's of open-wheel racing with their unique look. Many of the cars raced in the group have been in competition for four decades. The group will run a complete racing program including trophy dashes, heat racing and a main event. When the evening's racing is wrapped up the group welcomes race fans to come into the pits for a look at working pieces of racing history.
Tickets for this once a year spectacular are being offered at the main gate entrance beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Kids can enjoy the race for as little as $5 with youngsters under the age of five admitted for free.
As a reminder, discount ticket night at Yakima Speedway is coming up on Aug. 11 with special pricing and booklets being offered at the Speedway main office or at various locations across the Yakima Valley.
Fans are encouraged to contact the track for more details regarding this promotion.
Registration for the Labor Day Weekend Sun City 200 has opened for all late model drivers interested in taking part in two days of racing on the famed half-mile. Race teams are encouraged to contact the Speedway to register their car number and secure an entry form.
