MONROE, Washington — The 2nd Annual Mark Galloway Invitational NASCAR Whelen Night presented by Genie Industries is set for Saturday August 11 at 6pm. The night features a 100-lap main for the Speedway Chevrolet NASCAR Whelen All American Series I-5 Challenge Super Late Models with $3000.00 going to the winner of the 3/8-mile paved oval race. In addition the tightly contested Les Schwab Tires NASCAR Street Stock division title chase heats back up with their respective heats and main. Plus the Foster Press NASCAR Mini-Stock division title is still up for grabs with two drivers locked into a vicious tussle for the championship, will have their heats and main event. Throw in the crowd pleasing bump-to-pass V8 Extremes and the night is full of action. All this gets started at 6pm with spectator gates opening at 4:00pm.
The big money is drawing the top racers in their Super Late Models with current point leader Naima Lang expected to defend his win of the 1st Annual Mark Galloway Invitational. Kelly Mann is second in the point standings and leads the I-5 Challenge series between South Sound Speedway and Evergreen Speedway. Mann is fresh off a win of the prestigious Miller 200 at SSS. Both Pete Harding winner of the Summer Showdown and son Shane are expected. Shane is a former champion and won a 3/8 race earlier this season. There are many drivers expected that could take home the winners money of $3000.00. A few are overdue for a win such as Jeff Knight and Daniel Moore both have been to victory stage in the past. Molly Helmuth the 16 year old will be out with her new car and coming off a fourth in the Miller 200, 15 year old Garrett Archer will be there to maybe get that first Super Late Model win. Shane Sawin with his new sponsor Genie Industries in attendance will introduce his new car. Sawin is a former late model champion at South Sound Speedway. Many more are expected for the 100-lap feature on the 3/8-mile paved oval. Normally the Super Late Models go 50-laps on the short track. The 100-laps brings into the mix strategy, track position and tire management.
Street Stock point leader Frank Cowgill got his first win this season last Saturday and took over the point lead for the 2012 season championship by a mere 7-points. Five time winner this season Steve Ptacek is second in points after a mechanical problem forced an early exit last Saturday. Six drivers are within striking distance for the championship with five races left in 2012. The championship race is scheduled for Saturday September 15.
Jon Roberts won his fifth race of the season last Saturday and has 41-point lead over Michael Fritz who finished last week. The 41-points can disappear quickly if a driver has a problem in any of the final five weeks of racing for this division. There are a total of 58-points available if a driver wins their respective heat race and the main event each week. The Mini-Stock championship is also scheduled for September 15.
V8 Extremes are a group of racers that like to mix it up via the bump-to-pass rules. The type of main event is not known by the drivers until before the main. It could be such as: Cat & Mouse, Flag Pole, Figure Eight, Dual Oval, etc.
