STOCKTON, California — This past Saturday night was round 12 and 13 at Stockton 99 Speedway and the Modified division featured twin 40 lap main events. At the last points race Miller went for a scary ride heading into the back stretch wall during the trophy dash ending with an ambulance ride. From the wreck Miller suffered a sore neck and bruising but the champ hopes to return for the last tri holiday race in September. The points battle continued to get heated as Scott Winters extended his points lead as runner up Wes Miller was a no show allowing third place driver Nik Romano to close the gap for second, only four points back.
Scott Winters of Sacramento, CA, was the driver to beat as the No. 24 car topped the qualifying charts with a fast time of 14.526 seconds on the quarter mile oval. Followed by Nick Lyons, Mike Reggelman, Andy Vanderveer, and William Camera. The top four qualifiers raced the four lap trophy dash and Lyons took the lead on the start and never looked back collecting the trophy dash victory.
With a invert of six, Romano and Camera were set to lead the field to the green flag of the first of two 40-lap features and immediately Romano jumped to the early lead. Camera was hung out on the outside falling back to fourth by lap one and Lyons moved into second with Winters in tow. As Romano put a five car length lead over 2nd, the track points leader battled with Lyons for second. The duo battled for a few laps till Winters was able to land the second spot for good on lap five. Winters began to set his sights on Romano slowly picking up track space behind the leader. By lap 14, Winters was on the rear bumper of Romano and would race the leader side by side. Romano and Winters put on a good show with a race for the lead as Winters claimed the top spot by lap 17. Once Winters stole the lead he never looked back cruising to a 2.653 second victory over Nik Romano, Andy Vanderveer, Nick Lyons, and William Camera the final five.
The second 40 lap feature saw similar results and this time the Star Grand American modified drivers Lyons and Camera led the field to the final feature of the night. Lyons took the lead right from the start as Camera and Romano would battle for second. Romano cleared second place on lap three as Winters and Vanderveer would battle for fourth. As Romano was working on Lyons for the lead Winters came into the mix taking over second on lap 13 and the lead by lap 15. As Winters began to pull away from the field Lyons and Romano battled for second. The race was cut short to 25 laps and Winters sailed to a 2.216 second victory followed by Nick Lyons, Nik Romano. Andy Vanderveer and William Camera the top five.
