This weekend at Western Speedway its the biggest event of the year with the running of the prestigious Daffodil Cup for the Winged Sprint Cars. Longtime sponsor P&R Western Star will once again be the title sponsor of the oldest Sprint Car race that is run in Canada. The winner of the Daffodil Cup will be the driver who accumulates the most points from Friday and Saturday nights. Friday Night they will run for the Denny Rand Memorial. As well the WILROC Non Wing Sprint Cars will be in the action for both days along with the OTRA Old Timers.
As an added bonus P&R Western Star, General Manager Pat McConnell has started a track record fund and has put up the first $500 to any driver who can break the Sprint Car track record of 13.62 held by Randy Price.
Started by the “Daffodil King” Victoria’s Geoff Vantreight, the inaugural event in 1961 was won by Edmonton driver Eldon Rassmussen. Since that time some of the best Sprint Car drivers in Canada and the US have won the prestigious race, including Indy 500 veterans the late Billy Foster Victoria, Colorado’s, Jim Malloy, and Idaho’s Davey Hamilton. The late Roy Smith and Duncan’s Scott Aumen lead the list of winners with four wins each, Aumen is the defending Champion. Three time winners include the Montgomery Brothers Trevor and Jeff along with Norm Ellefson from Spokane.
Drivers expected to challenge for the win include last year’s NSRA champion Sierra Jackson from Merdian, Idaho, Jackson currently sits in third position in the WWSCT point’s standings behind fellow Idaho drivers Johnny “The Jet” Giesler who leads with 378 points followed by Bryan Warf with 345 and Jackson with 313. Local driver’s include four time and last year’s Daffodil Cup winner Scott Aumen from Duncan, Jeff Montgomery, Matt Mansell, Darren Yates and Guy Barrett. Other BC drivers include Ron, Rich and Chase Larson from Quesnel, Washington State drivers include Randy Dubois and Todd Coleman.
Jeff Bird leads the WILROC Non Wing point standings with 531 points followed by Chris Root at 465 and Paul Verhagen at 452. Rob Scott is in the fourth position followed by Ron French in fifth with with 372 points.
