MADERA, Ca — It was a historical night on the “Fastest 1/3 Mile in the West” as the Madera Speedway">Madera Speedway premiered the new 18 Second Bracket race on Saturday, August 18, 2012, with racecars from the Toyota Sedans, 4-Bangers, Sports Mods and Lunker Daddy Late Model divisions.
After the local classes featuring the Lunker Daddy Late Models, Toyota Sedans, Hobby Stocks, MSTs and 4-Bangers put on yet another big-time showing, the 18 Second Bracket race made its debut for the first time ever on asphalt track.
It was Fresno’s Kyle Fortney that became the first driver to win the 30-lap main in the eight-car innovative race that was introduced by Madera Speedway promoter Kenny Shepherd.
Fortney, who took fourth place in the Toyota Sedans race earlier in the evening, actually finished second overall in the bracket race behind Lunker Daddy Late Model car driver Nastasia Dodd but because of the 18-second ‘breakout’ rule in which a driver is disqualified from winning if he or she goes faster than 18 seconds at any point of the race, he was ruled the official winner and received the $200 cash prize.
“It honestly feels awesome and I think it is really cool that I could win it with our type of car (Sedans),” Fortney said. “I feel like Candee (McIntosh) and I are representing the class and it’s an honor to be able to win it.”
With seven laps to go, Fortney was in second behind Dodd as he held that spot all the way to the finish line. It was revealed in the winner’s circle that Dodd went faster than 18 seconds on Lap 16 as Fortney was declared the winner.
It was the only time that Dodd went past the 18-second mark on an otherwise near flawless performance by her and the field of drivers in the new type of race that only had one caution.
“The other cars are really big and ours are small but coming out here, the game-plan was to just not get hit and try to stay out of everyone’s way,” Fortney said. “I didn’t expect to get a win, I just wanted to come out here and have some fun.”
Other winners on the night included Tony Schmitz (Lunker Daddy Late Models); Del McIntosh (Toyota Sedans); Ryan Hart (Hobby Stocks); John McCollum Jr. (MSTs) and Tyler Johnson (4-Bangers).
The Madera Speedway returns to action Saturday, August 25, 2012, with another 18 Second Bracket race along with double the points for the local classes including the Lunker Daddy Late Models, Toyota Sedans, Hobby Stocks, MSTs and 4-Bangers.
