Western Speedway will host one of the premier Stock Car races in the country as well as one oldest and longest Late Model events of the year in Western Canada this weekend with the 34th running of the Reg Midgley Canada 200 at the fast 4/10ths mile paved oval in Langford on Friday and Saturday Night. The Canada 200 will be the final event for the Advance Testing ASA BC Late Model Series, as well the 1st annual Fountain Tire BC Street Stock Drivers Challenge that will also compete both days and crown a first time champion.
The action will start on Friday with qualifying and heat races for the Late Models, there will be two 20 lap heat races that will determine the starting lineup for Saturdays Canada 200. The Fountain Tire Street Stocks will run a complete show both nights that will include qualifying, trophy dashes, heat races and 75 lap main events.
Leading the contenders for the Canada 200, include the 2010 and 2011 winner Korbin Thomas from Whiterock, Thomas is one of the top drivers in the Northwest and is considered to be a favorite to visit victory square at every track he runs. Other former winners competing, include the 98 and 99 winner Darrell Midgley and the 2007 winner Vancouver’s Dave Hemrich. Both Midgley and Hemrich are coming off wins at their last events. ASA points leader Tom Berrow from Coquitlam leads with 297 points followed by Hemrich with 262 points.,
The list of local drivers expected to challenge will include 2011 ASA Champion and the winner of the last ASA Feature in Penticton, Geoff Morris, Morris also has a Late Model win in Victoria earlier this year and is tied for third in the ASA point standings with fellow Victoria driver Wade Bland at 237 points, Bland also picked up a win at Saratoga Speedway for the 150 lap ASA event in July. Geoff’s brother Brent Morris along with Rory Smith could also have a very good chance win the 200 as both have very competitive cars.
The dark horse for the 200 would have to be Langley’s Jason Terasenko who finished second to Thomas last year and was the 2011 Western Speedway Late Model Champion, Teresanko is poised to make a very serious threat for the win. Over 20 of the top Late Model drivers in BC will be in action this weekend at the speedway.
In the four race Fountain Tire BC Street Stock Drivers Challenge between Western Speedway and Penticton Speedway, Victoria’s Ryan Wade the five time Western Speedway Champion leads the point standings after winning both main events in Penticton earlier in the month. Wade has 180 points 18 more than fellow Victorian Brian Clutchey who has 162 points, Clutchey finished second to Wade both nights. In third is Penticton’s Brian Poppe with 145 points on the strength on a fourth and fifth place finishes. Victoria driver Gord Wheeler is fourth in points with 125 points, from fifth to ninth is only separated by 12 points, Agassiz driver Brent Rohrer has 112 points in fifth, followed by Daryl Crocker with 108, Penticton drivers Mark Ruehle and Dean Perry with 103 and 102 points, Langley’s Murray Jones is one point back at 101 points. Over 20 cars are expected to challenge on Friday and Saturday nights events in the Fountain Tire BC Street Stock Drivers Challenge.
The action starts Friday with gates open at 5:00 pm, qualifying at 6:00 pm with racing at 7:00 pm, and on Saturday gates open at 4:30 pm, qualifying at 5:30 pm and racing at 6:30 pm.
