MADERA, California — A season’s worth of efficient racing at the Madera Speedway">Madera Speedway all paid off for five drivers on Championship Night as track titles were given out Saturday, September 29, 2012, in the LunkerDaddy Late Models, Toyota Sedans, Hobby Stocks, MSTs and 4-Bangers class.
Tony Schmitz capped off his championship season with his seventh straight main win in the 30-lap LunkerDaddy Late Model race.
Schmitz got an early challenge from second place finisher Jason Aguirre before he was able to break away from him on Lap 14 on the way to his first title in 26 years.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Schmitz said. “We put a good season together and it’s finally here. It’s the first time we have ever chased points all the way until the end and we made it!”
Like Schmitz, Frank Mazzei finished his Hobby Stocks’ title run with a win in the 20-lap main.
Mazzei won the first six races of the season and picked up his seventh one overall to clinch the championship.
“Winning the championship with my crew in my first year after coming back, you can’t ask for much more,” Mazzei said. “It’s really a great night.”
Toyota Sedans’ driver Jarred Tickel won his second straight track championship after taking third in the 30-lap main won by Jason Kerns.
Tickel entered the race as the points’ leader and also celebrated his championship with a win in the 30-lap 18 Second Bracket race.
“It’s a good deal and I’m stoked about it,” Tickel said taking back-to-back titles. “It’s a blast to win Toyota Sedans championship again. Everybody was battling it out for a win and it was pretty much even throughout the year. That made it really fun to race with these guys.”
John McCollum Jr. also took his first championship in the MST division while Tyler Johnson cemented his title in the 4-Bangers class.
Other main winners on the night include Kevin Thompson (MST); Mark Jacke (4-Bangers); Jeff Williams (Southwest Tour Trucks) and Andrew Vanderpool (WSRA Mini Cups).
The Madera Speedway will be go dark for two weeks before returning to action on Saturday, October 20, 2012 when it hosts the 5th Annual Pumpkin Smash Halloween Bash and Blow Up featuring the Championship Race for the Coors Light Late Model Open Series (Race No. 6) 100 laps (Split 50’s), Hobby Stocks Open, 300 Lap Enduro and Boats drags along with an 18 Second Bracket Race.
