ELMA, Washington — The 2012 USAC Ford Focus Midget season was simply dominated by one driver at Grays Harbor Raceway, Jared Peterson. The standout from Stanwood led or tied in every category in the division except for one and that was heat race wins. There were seven events ran during the season with three different feature winners.
“I’m really happy to win this championship for Carla and Gaylon Stewart they really put a lot of effort into this program this year,” commented Peterson, “and of course special thanks to the sponsors on the car Dave Lentz with Sno-Lynn Machine, Central Welding, and the great people at the XXX Race Company.”
Peterson would win five of the seven races and finished in the top five a total of five times. He would score two heat race wins and two trophy dashes victories along with setting fast time four times. Later in the season Jared would win the series championship with the USAC Northwest Ignite Ford Focus Midget Series winning eleven of the fourteen races for the season. The championship would mark the fifth of his career as he managed to earn four of them at the Deming Speedway in Micro Sprints along with a Clay Cup title at Deming which he would accomplish in 2007.
Chase Goetz of Snohomish would finish second in the final point standings. The fifteen-year-old second-generation driver didn’t earn a win at GHR in 2012 but he was consistent in competition earning five top five finishes. However he did led the class in heat race wins with three look for him to be a threat in the years to come.
Montesano’s Jeremy Miller finished third in the points table and earned a huge main event victory in September to be one of the only drivers to beat Jared Peterson. Miller boasted four top five finishes and two heat race wins in 2012.
Garret Johnson of Poulsbo was the only other driver to earn a 2012 feature triumph which took place in May. In addition to the feature win he would finish fifth or better five times and won one heat race. Michael Millard completed the top five finishers in the standings. The Brinnon native earned only one heat race win but did finish in the top five on four separate occasions.
The Grays Harbor Raceway is known for its high speeds and side by side racing as well as its large size.
