Novato, CA (Sunday, March 17, 2002) - BayPac Racing's Jim Pettit II returns to El Cajon Speedway this Saturday behind the wheel of the #03 Hall Kinion.com/CareerBuilder.com Ford Taurus.
Pettit, who finished 13th in the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series opener at Phoenix last month, will be making his first appearance on the tough 3/8-mile oval since finishing second there a year ago.
Pettit led the first 60 laps of the 2001 Southwest Series race at El Cajon before eventual winner MK Kanke took control. Pettit couldn't catch Kanke, but he had enough to hold off a hard-charging Auggie Vidovich to collect the first of three top-5 finishes on the season.
"We ran good at some tracks last year, just not good enough," said Pettit, who finished 8th in the overall driver's standings. "We have another year under our belts and I believe we will be more competitive at each track this year. Cajon is a benchmark."
If Saturday night's race at Cajon is a benchmark for Pettit and the BayPac crew, the season opener at Phoenix was merely a disappointment. Pettit qualified 5th and was running with the lead pack midway through the race when NASCAR officials handed the #03 car a questionable penalty that took Pettit out of contention.
After talking with NASCAR officials and seeing the apparent lack of contact on tape delay, BayPac team owner Jesse Rhodes is ready to move on.
"It was an unfortunate penalty, but we're ready to move on," Rhodes said. "The crew has been working hard on getting the car ready for El Cajon, and Jim gained some much-needed confidence last year with his 2nd-place finish. "We're eager to get back to racing."
