El Cajon, CA—Popular driver, Ron Overman of Lakeside, CA returned to Cajon Speedway last weekend to secure a consecutive Sportsman win for the new season. "The two wins are a great start for the Gray Thunder Racing team as we have a couple of new team members including new crew chief, Kenny Louis along with returning crew members, Bud Brant, Sheri Ackerman and Jim Watkins. My #2 J&L Insulation/Wild Bills Monte Carlo is really hooked up this year," quoted Ron Overman.
Ron Overman, 59, recently drove the #82 Cleanline Racing Monte Carlo for the Cajon Speedway Nascar Featherlite Southwest Tour race several weeks ago, but a several hour rain delay prevented Ron Overman from racing as he missed the cut for the race by one position. Ron was pretty excited about the race as the car was setup and was ready to roll. "My Southwest Tour crew chief, Kevin Clark spent a lot of time going over the tour car with the assistance of the Gray Thunder Racing team and suggested several changes which made the car very comfortable to handle during a test session before the tour race at Cajon," said Ron Overman. Kevin was also the crew chief for Bruce Bechtel, who broke and currently holds the Nascar Southwest Tour track record at Cajon Speedway (6/3/00, 87.77, 15.381).
"Maybe the fact that I was ready to race for the Southwest Tour race has flowed over to my Sportsman program," said Ron. Both the Gray Thunder Racing team and Ron are looking forward to a very competitive and fun season at the 3/8-mile paved oval which will also include racing the Open Comp race at the end of the season.
Ron Overman captured his first title in 1974 as Cajon Speedway Nascar Super Stock Champion and most recently in 1996 winning the Cajon Speedway Grand American Modified Championship. Ron also finished second in last year's points standings behind his stepson, Todd McLauchlan, in the Sportsman division.
Ron Overman also spearheaded the Racer's Reaching Out Award which contributes $200 to each night's trophy dash winner at Cajon Speedway. That winner then designates a charity of their choice for the $200 award.
