Magic Valley Speedway hosted the second appearance of the Cactus Petes Intermountain Late Models as the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge action continued Saturday Night
With only seven laps in the books the Cactus Petes Intermountain Late Models had not one, but six caution flags. With a total of eleven cautions the 50 lap main event became a game of survival of the fittest. Burley Idaho driver Clint Kidd found himself involved in a first lap incident sending himself and Tom Weiss to the rear of the field for the restart. After setting fast time in McDonalds time trials Kidd knew he had what he needed to get to the front if he could just stay out of trouble. Kidd did what he had to do taking over the lead on lap 20 and holding off the hard charge of B-heat race winner Joe Hood. Zan Sharp rode the back bumper of Hood but couldn’t get the bite he needed off the corner to make a serious challenge. Russell Butler managed to avoid the cautions and come home fourth while Randy Hardman fell back to fourth after leading 17 laps early in the race.
Point leader Scott Sidwell motored his NAPA Auto Parts pony Stock to fast time in the McDonalds time trials extending his point lead over Kevin Bermingham. Bermingham lost even more ground as he finished four positions behind Sidwell in the A-heat race but made some of it back up as he took his second win of the 2002 season. Mike Greco captured his third top five finish after finishing second. Sidwell held on for third as defending Champion Alan Larson brought home fifth. Last weeks main event winner Billi Miles didn’t have the power she had last week as she gave her all for her fifth place finish. Pole setter Eugene Weunsch gave the fans some excitement as he totaled his Ford Mustang on the last lap of the 25 lap main event. Weunsch tangled with the turn four wall as he raced for the checkered flag. In a post race interview Weunsch said “ All I have![]()
