"MILLER LITE MEMORIAL DAY CHALLENGE" TO NOTCH SECOND WIN OF SEASON (May 26 Erie, CO) – If Jerry Robertson was needing to put some momentum back on his side, he gathered plenty of it Sunday evening at Colorado National Speedway. Robertson mastered the final-night segment of the "Miller Lite Memorial Day Challenge", and while the win may have helped his Prestige Capital Funding Late Model division title chances only slightly, it could prove to be just the boost he needed. The 40-year-old, from Arvada, CO, dominated the 40 lap NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge feature contest, looking very much like the driver that scored ten victories in each of the past two seasons at the 3/8 mile paved oval.
Roger Avants controlled the field as the green flag fell, while Robertson quickly moved up from the sixth starting-position. After overhauling Ken Walter for second on lap seven, Robertson moved in on Avants. The pair ran in a side by side formation for a couple of laps, until Robertson locked down the top spot for good on the twelfth circuit, with Scotty Backman soon following. Pulling away from the rest of the pack, a four length gap separated the top two until the closing stages, when Robertson's Coors Light Pontiac Grand Prix surged ahead. Backman crossed the stripe trailing by ten car-lengths, as Avants settled with third, Bruce Yackey took fourth, and Steve Yackey placed fifth.
Bruce Yackey remains at the top of the standings, ahead of Avants by four points (258 to 254). Robertson is still third in the season-long rundown, but gained six marks on Yackey. He is now 18 points back.
The Dunlap's Trailers Super Stocks competed in an extra-length 40 lap contest, and Jim Bob Rogers came out on top in the special event. Throughout the second half of the race, Rogers faced heavy lapped traffic, with nearest challenger Trent Phillips in close pursuit. Rogers picked his way through the backmarkers with precision, and held off Phillips by less than a car length to notch his first career feature victory. Early leader Darrel Bauer appeared to take third, but refused the post-race tech inspection, and was disqualified. In the revised finish, Daren Gailey was elevated to third, with Andy Lewis fourth and top rookie contender Gary Lee fifth. Championship leader Mike Bowen could only muster a ninth place showing, allowing Phillips to pull to within two points.
Danny Medina recorded a perfect seven-of-seven in last year's Realty Executives Legends Car Series results, and is now two-for-two on this season. Anthony Medina kept the race close, and took the runner-up award trailing by just over a car length. Jay Sant, Paul Harder, and Barry Dykes completed the top five.
In Witthar Racing Trains action, the "Last Call Train" survived the grueling ten lap event for top honors. With Wally Wall and Shirley Thompson aboard, they rode the rails for their second victory of 2002, with "Merl's Revenge" in second.
A visit from the RE/MAX Challenge Series, NASCAR Touring, will be the next event at Colorado National Speedway on Saturday night, June 1st. The "Auto Trader 150" carries a purse of nearly $50,000, while support race action includes the ProTrucks, the Figure-Eights, and the Trains.
