June 2, 2002... The visiting clubs at South Sound Speedway brought an abundance of cars this weekend. On the sunny and warm afternoon 93 cars qualified, by night fall it grew cold but the hot racing action kept the crowd heated up. The Northwest Street Stock Tour (NWSST), Foreign Stock Car Racing Association (FSCRA), NW Legends and Bandoleros and the Outlaw Compacts wowed spectators in Rochester on the 3/8ths oval.

The NWSST timed in 23 cars with Willy Thom being the fastest. Pat Schwartzkopf and Grant Baker won the dashes. Brian Puncochar, Curt Nusom and Chris Schlaht were all heat race winners. Michael Partridge was the only car not able to start the main event. As the green flew for the 30 lap main event, Keith Clevenger exited immediately for a major mechanical problem. On lap four, Mike Crase left the raceway. Neither driver would re-enter the race. Curt Nusom led the first eight laps of the race until he was over took by Mike Aubrey. On lap 16, a yellow was thrown for a bumper laying in turn three. During the yellow, Willy Thom exited to fix a flat tire but returned before the green was thrown again and was not down any laps. Right after the restart, on lap 17, Dustin Wilkinson took the lead from Aubrey. On lap 20, Mike Aubrey got into the rear of Brian Overturf getting him loose. Overturf, due to his good driving abilities, saved the car and only lost three spots. Aubrey was black flagged for overly aggressive driving. The final yellow was thrown on lap 23. Dan Harris and Brian Puncochar had to exit the track with damage. Dustin Wilkinson was the winner with Pat Schwartzkopf in second. Third went to Larry Gaylord with Brian Overturf and Willy Thom in tow.

It was an outstanding night for the Semi-Pro driver, Rick McNeill in the Northwest Legends. McNeil scored fast time along with a dash, heat and the main win. Duane Swanson won the Pro dash while Kenny Armstrong won the Masters dash. Scott Braun won the second Semi-Pro heat. The Pro/Master heat races were won by Rich Spooner and Bob Kronenberg. In the Semi-Pro main event, Rick McNeil took the lead on lap three from Jeff Harris. Harris finished second with Louis Grant in third and Rob Hawton in fourth. The Master/Pro main event was led by Rich Spooner until lap 17 when Duane Swanson took over after racing close for five previous laps. Swanson won with Spooner in second and Mike Munger in third. Craig Derksen dominated the Bandoleros winning the dash heat and main. Mitchel Ferderer was second in the main event and also clocked in with the fastest time. Andrew Caddell was third with Justin Jackson and Justin Glave in tow.

Eric Kaas had a great night in the Outlaw Compacts. He timed in almost a half second faster than the rest of the field. Dale Roberts won the dash and the A-heat race. Matt Stickler scored the B-heat win. On lap three of the main event, Wayne Dillon and Dave Powell got together sending them both to the pits for the night. On lap 10, Jim Milligan got into Derek Sonnenberg, spinning him, and was sent into the pits with the black flag. A caution was not thrown for the incident. Dale Roberts led the first 20 of 30 laps. On lap 21, Eric Kaas took over the lead. Kaas won the main with Roberts right behind him. Eric Angeledes, Pete Brady, and Matt Stickler rounded out the top five.

The FSCRA and the Northwest Late Model 4's combined efforts Saturday to form a 24 car class. Kirk Hall, who won the Western Racing Series main last Sunday along with the Enduro on Monday, qualified fastest of the group and took a dash win. Kevin McKeehan was the winner of the other dash. Jeff Smyth and Jim Loen each won a heat race. In the main event, Gene Kaufman led for the first 14 of 35 laps. There was a caution on lap 14 for Dan Hale, Brad Carpenter, Earl Williamson and Brent Beall all got together. Also, a fire was seen under Bob Quarterman's car. It was put out but he was done for the night. When the green flew again, Kirk Hall was the leader. On lap 24, Scott Tiplady went off with a flat tire. When the checkered flag was flying, Lonnie Stocker, Gene Kaufman, Gregg Radford, and Dan Hale all tangled in turn four. Hall won the main event with Keith Van Dyne in second. Third went to Mike Courage with Kameron McKeehan and Paul McCarthey rounding out the top five.

Next week at South Sound Speedway is CRAFTSMAN NIGHT at the races. The Late Model Super Stocks, Top Notch Trailer Street Stocks, Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks and MMRA Super mini-Cups and Future Stars will be on hand. Check out www.southsoundspeedway.com for all the results and up tp date information.
