BEHN SWEEPS LATE MODEL RACESSOUTH SOUND SPEEDWAY
Source: Kristy Palmer
By June 9, 2002... The NASCAR Late Model Super Stocks and Top Notch Trailer Street Stocks represented the Weekly Racing Series, presented by Dodge, with outstanding bumper-to-bumper action Saturday night at South Sound Speedway. Joining in the fun were the Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks, MMRA Super Mini-Cups and Future Stars, and the visiting Hobby Stocks from Spanaway Speedway. "Quick" Nick Behn lived up to his nickname on Saturday in the Late Model Super Stocks by sweeping the division in all races. It all began with Tom Sweatman qualifying fastest, with a 14.65, but not making it in time for the dash. Behn took the dash win and was ready for the first main event. Wade Bland, who towed all the way from Victoria, blew a motor after qualifying and was unable to start the main event. Eric Tibbitts started on the inside poll with Roger Drake on the outside. Drake jumped out to the lead but after only 4 laps, a yellow was thrown. Mike Olson and Keith Armstrong got together causing Olson to go down one lap to the pack. For scoring and racing timeliness purposes, two yellow (caution) laps are counted. After the two yellow laps, Nick Behn took his car off the track to fix a rubbing fender and came back before the green flew. Behn was realigned to the rear of the pack but stayed on the lead lap. On lap nine Tom Sweatman took the lead from Roger Drake, passing both Drake and Eric Tibbitts in one lap. On lap 18, another yellow was thrown when Dan Obrist got into Amber Cope, who was running fourth. The accident cost Cope one lap and got Obrist a black flag. Keith Armstrong took his car off the track after the caution laps but did not return. Bob Presley also took his car off the track but returned seven laps later. Dan Obrist returned on lap 23 after fixing some damage to his car from the previous accident. Lap 26 brought another caution flag for Tim Gosch leaving him one lap down. Lap 39 brought out the final caution flag when leader Tom Sweatman exited the track with mechanical problems, leaving Eric Tibbitts in first with Nick Behn in second. On the restart, Angela Cope got loose and turned around taking Randy Dalebout and Ray Wallace with her. Wallace and Cope were able to continue with some sheet metal damage while Dalebout had to be towed off. Tibbitts led until lap 44 when Nick Behn took over. Behn took it all the way to the end to win the first main of the night. Tibbitts was second with Ray Wallace, Roger Drake and Alan Spivey rounding out the top five. Amber Cope started on the poll position for the second main event and quickly took the lead pulling Roger Drake with her to run in second position. Eric Tibbitts ran third with Ray Wallace and Nick Behn battling behind him. These five cars ran hard up front while Bob Presley, who started dead last, began making his climb up the pack. Lap 25 brought out the first caution for Ray Wallace, Tim Gosch and Alan Spivey who all got together. Before a complete green lap could be counted, another caution was thrown for Angela Cope who got into a spin with Jimmy Clair and Dan Obrist. Obrist exited the track after the two cautions. With Wallace having to go to the back of the pack, Mike Olson entered the top five with Bob Presley right behind him. Wallace fought his way back into the top five by lap 35. Amber Cope still led with Roger Drake, Nick Behn and Eric Tibbitts behind her. Fifth was Wallace with Presley and Olson in tow. Cope and Drake were fighting hard together and on lap 48, Drake took Cope around after she led all the laps to that point. Drake was flagged for the incident and Cope had to go to the back of the pack. Behn won again with Wallace, Tibbitts, Presley and Angela Cope in tow. Amber Cope finished ninth. Chad Hinkle clocked in with the fastest time for the Top Notch Trailer Street Stocks. Mark Boehi won the dash for the night, his first of the season. Jim Jussila and Joe Swanson were unable to participate in the nights racing events. Jussila broke a crankshaft in practice while Swanson has a fractured thumb that was injured on May 11th in a racing incident. JJ Hamilton took the heat race with Brad Borton in second. Kreg Kadoun started on the poll of the main but after one lap, he broke a drive shaft and had to exit. Bill Manney jumped out to the lead with Mark Boehi in second. By lap 10, JJ Hamilton and Bobby Micielli got around Boehi. Scott McNeil spun kicking rock onto the race surface and a yellow was thrown on lap 14 to clean them up. Hamilton took over the lead on lap 15 and that's how the race ended. Hamilton was first with Manney in second. Bobby Micielli was third with Mark Boehi and Chad Hinkle getting the checkered behind him. Brian Wilson took the night off from being a little Bumblebee driver to race with the big cars in the Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks and gave them a run for their money. Wilson got the fast time and took the dash. Mike Saylors won the B-heat with Zach Floreck and Mark Rorvik following. Dan Rhodes won the A-heat with Mike Osborn and Tim Vermillion clearing behind him. Brandin Fisher got the poll for the main event but chose to go to the back because he was having mechanical problems. This left Wilson with the poll position and he jumped out to the lead. Close behind Wilson was Mike Osborn and Dan Rhodes. Many had mechanical problems. David Dix left the track after two laps. After five laps, Brandin Fisher, Tim Vermillion, and Curt Moon all exited and Dix came back. Justin Floreck left on lap six and Zach Floreck on lap nine. Wilson won the main with Dan Rhodes, Mike Osborn, Bobby Moore and Mark Rorvik finishing in the top five. Seven Hobby Stocks from Spanaway Speedway visited South Sound after being rained out at their track on Friday night. Jesse Thompson timed in fastest but Justin Picard took the dash and heat. Mike Saylors and Curt Moon, Hinkle Homes Pure Stock drivers, joined the group and started on the front row. Saylors led the first two laps but Justin Picard took over after that. Steve Woods took over the second spot. Doug Woods was running third but on lap four, Doug Woods moved into second and Jesse Thompson into third. On lap 16, Thompson took over the second spot leaving Doug Woods in third. Thompson was no match for Justin Picard. Picard won the main with Jesse Thompson in second and Doug Woods in third. Mike Saylors finished fourth and Erik Moore in fifth. Steve Woods was sixth with Curt Moon and Joe Marcy in tow. Mike Taylor finished ninth after leaving on lap six. Patrick Phillips clocked in with a 16.85 in the MMRA Super Mini-Cups for fast time. Chris Bell scored the dash win while Phillips won the A-heat and Scott Moore won the B-heat. Tom Phillips got out to the lead before his son, Patrick Phillips took over the lead and never looked back. There were no yellows and Phillips won with Scott Moore in second. Chris Bell, Kevin Harris, Chris Davis, and James Sullivan were the top six. In the Future Stars, Adam Atkins took the fastest qualifying time of 18.19. Cody Erskine won the dash and Atkins took the heat. During the heat race, BJ Brown got into an accident and was taken off the track in the ambulance, complaining of a sore ankle. Brown did, however make it back out for the main event. Cougar Stewart showed off a new patriotic paint job but before the main started, she pulled into the middle of the track because of some mechanical problems. Atkins took the lead of the main with JJ Hickle in second. On the last lap, Cody Stewart got around Hickle for second. Atkins was the winner with Stewart, Hickle, Daniel Moore and BJ Brown rounding out the top five. Next week at South Sound Speedway the WMRA Midgets, Outlaw Compacts, Golden Wheels, NWSST and the NW Legends and Bandoleros will all be visiting.
