The 2000 Star Mazda Series-West Division championship kicks off March 4-5, at Phoenix Int'l Raceway on the one-mile oval, with four of the 12 races running over Speedvision-covered, American Le Mans weekends.
Although most of the venues are familiar to Star Mazda competitors, series officials have added a "Special Bonus Race," that will be run at a new facility. "This is an ambitious project, to say the least," said Star Mazda Series administrator Gary Rodrigues. "We'll make a final announcement about the location as well as the other pertinent details when all the important arrangements are set." The "Special Bonus Race" will be limited to the top 18 drivers in the West Division point standings, which will be determined after the Sears Point event.
Now in its 10th year, the West Division championship continues as one of the most-respected, driver development series in the country thanks to Star Mazda series supporters including Mazda Motor of America, Star Race Cars, Goodyear and BBS Wheels. "This is going to be a fun-packed year for Star Formula Mazda drivers," Rodrigues said.
