2002 NASCAR LATE MODEL SERIES EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONSSUPER LATE MODELS
Source: Mesa Marin Raceway
Mesa Marin Raceway – The anticipation of the 2002 NASCAR Late Model Series at Mesa Marin was filled with such phrases as “competitive”, “growing car counts” and “new rules”. So far in 2002, the field of cars is competitive, as nine different drivers have found the Mesa Marin Winner’s Circle in nine main events, a record at Mesa Marin. The car counts have exceeded expectations with an average of 23, and a high of 29 for the season. As for the new rules, love’em or hate’em, nine winner’s in nine races is a good sign of a competitive rules package. Defending Late Model champion Gene Fife leads the 2002-point standings, but has yet to win a main event. “The championship is our goal, I want that trip to Daytona so we are looking at the big picture,” Fife stated. “But I have to say it is getting frustrating being at the half-way point of the season without a win.” Fife added. The 2002 Mesa Marin series champions will be awarded a six-day trip for two to the Daytona 500 in February 2003, presented by Uniglobe Travel. In the 2002 Super Late Model Series, Mike Duncan leads at 245, but Brandon Miller is closing in with 227, Kevin Small is third with 213. Any Super Late Model driver winning a main event in 2002, will be eligible for a $10,000 payday if he or she also wins the season ending Mechanix Wear October Classic 200. Duncan, Miller, Craig Raudman and Barry Bradshaw have each drove to victory in 2002 and are therefore eligible for the October Classic bonus. Josh Horn continues his championship march in the Street Stock division as he has five wins in eight starts and leads in the championship standings. Saturday racing line up will feature the Late Models, Super Late Models, the Street Stocks, the Auto Club 911 Race for Youth Series and the first race of the 2002 ChevronTexaco High School Racing Series. Gates open at 6pm, with racing underway at 7:30. Adult admission $9.00, with children 12 and under free.
