IRWINDALE, California -- Todd Burns, driver of the #4 Villa Roma sponsored Chevrolet Late Model, pulled double duty this weekend by entering his #4 Golden West Trailer Sales Pontiac Grand Prix in the 200-lap Jani-King Winston West race.
During practice for the Winston West race, Burns' Pontiac hit oil left by another competitor and made hard contact with the turn two wall with the rear of his car. The team surveyed the damage and started going to work to put the #4 back together. About four hours after the wreck and having to miss qualifying, the car was put on the grid in the 21st starting position.
Prior to the West race, Burns started the night off by qualifying his Chevrolet Late Model in the third position, which placed him in the 7th starting position due to the invert. Burns and Price battled side-by-side, lap after lap, with Burns taking the third finishing position behind Price. Burns stated in his on-track interview, "I've got to thank my crew chief James Valk and my team for giving me such a good car tonight." Burns went on to say, "I've got to thank all of the sponsors for making tonight happen Golden West Trailer Sales, Villa Roma Sausage, SJ Burkhardt, Dalcorp, JRC Sales, Maropulos Racing Engines, Ron's Rear Ends, Racecar Factory, and all the many others for helping out to make the Winston West race possible."
After exiting the track, Burns quickly made it behind the wheel of the #4 Golden West Trailer Sales Pontiac to start the 200-lap Jani-King Winston West race before a sellout crowd. At the green, Burns started to pick off competitors. By lap 11, Burns was up to the 11th position. At lap 140, the team made their pit stop and Burns went out 12th and was able to pick up two spots to place his Pontiac in the 10th finishing position. Considering the events earlier in the day, this was a remarkable finish for the team. Burns stated, "I'm very happy with the results tonight. I really would have liked to qualify the car because I think we could have been top 10, but after today's unfortunate events in practice, we're all going home feeling good about this finish."
