SNOHOMISH, Washington -- Jubilation reigns supreme in Snohomish today as Travis Powell and His Powell Motorsports USA team celebrate their best finish this season in the Raybestos Brakes North West Tour. Last night saw Travis traverse through a mêlée of twisted metal and shattered fiberglass that was the Pepsi 125 at South Sound Speedway.
The # 87 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix started outside the pole for the B trophy dash. There was a back and forth battle for second place with Powell gaining the position and South Sound Speedway’s own Bob Presley #17 winning the dash.
From the outset of the main event, Powell, who started outside row seven, found that his groove was on the outside, where he began to pass several cars including some of the usual front runners. An accident several laps into the race caused some cosmetic damage to the front end necessitating a trip to the pits to remove the hood eventually putting him two laps down. When the green flag flew, Powell began to work his way back up through the field when late in the race, a spin cost him several positions. Travis finished two laps down in 12th place and he was the top finishing rookie of the race coming ever closer to Kelly Mann for the RBNWT Rookie of the year honors.
After the race Powell had this statement: “the car ran great it was really hooked up. I love this track, both my “Rookie of the Race” and best finishes were here at South Sound and I am looking forward to coming back next year.”….“I am sorry to see Kelly (Mann) out of the race early and I hope that he can get things together for next weekend in Kalispell he is a great competitor and a truly nice guy.”
The crew was charged up with excitement and “flew” all the way home. Today people who previously overlooked this little team from Snohomish WA are beginning to sit up and take notice. Many words of congratulations and continued success in the series have been received from fellow competitors and owners.
Powell Motorsports USA will be starting two cars at the “Rumble in the Rockies IV Coors Light 125” on Saturday August 10, 2002 in Kalispell Montana. The team’s progress can be tracked on:
