ANTIOCH, California -- Making his move around Mike Salazar on the last restart of the race, Chico point leader Randy McDaniel went on to score his second 20 lap All Pro Series Dirt Modified feature win of the season Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. The win was worth $450 for McDaniel, who had to change motors that morning to meet the All Pro Series rules. McDaniel has recently put his cars up for sale as he plans a move into Wingless Spec Sprints in 2003. Salazar settled for a second place finish ahead of point leader Brian Curran. After Lynn Zehr was disqualified for being light at the scales, Trevor Clymens got the victory in the 20 lap Pure Stock main event ahead of a career best second for Steve Perry and new point leader Melissa Hansen.
Keith Brown Sr. just held off Joel Hannagan to win their six lap Dirt Modified heat race with Don Shelton and Jeff Thomas winning their respective heat races. Kellen Chadwick scored the victory in the five lap Trophy Dash. Gary Durbin paced the main event ahead of McDaniel and Salazar for three laps before McDaniel used a high move in Turn 2 of the fourth lap to take over. An inside move on the front stretch of the sixth lap put Salazar into second, and Thomas spun in Turn 4 for a lap six caution flag. McDaniel chose the outside on the restart, but Salazar surprised him by taking the lead as Bert Elworthy settled into third. Durbin beat Elworthy back to a lap ten caution flag for debris on the track, but the restart lap saw Durbin spin in Turn 4, collecting several cars as Salazar led McDaniel and Elworthy back to the flag. Salazar chose the inside and continued to lead McDaniel and Elworthy on the restart. A final caution flag flew on lap 14 when Debbie Clymens spun, collecting Thomas and Steve Repp. Salazar stayed on the inside, but McDaniel beat him on the restart and slipped to the bottom groove racing into Turn 1. Curran raced past Elworthy for third. There was no stopping McDaniel from there as he scored the impressive victory ahead of Salazar, Curran, Elworthy and Kenny Neu.
The Pure Stocks ran three six lap qualifying heat races with wins going to Jason Hayes, Kevin Beard and Tim Welance. Clymens claimed five lap Trophy Dash honors. The track was dry slick when the Pure Stocks got to it for their main event, and several drivers spun for caution flags. Zehr set the pace from the drop of the green flag ahead of Hansen and Perry. There had aleady been four caution flags by the time Perry made a low move in Turn 2 of the eighth lap to take second from Hansen. Richard Shearer spun from the top five on lap six, and Hansen spun from third on lap nine. However, incoming point leader Megan McCown lost several laps in the pits, giving Hansen the opportunity she needed to take the point lead. Clymens and Welence both passed Perry on the back stretch of the 11th lap for second and third. A lap 18 caution flag, the eighth of the race, flew when Welance spun from the top five. Due to time, the race was ended there. An impressive drive by Zehr was all for naught when his car came up light at the scales, and apparent fifth place finisher Brian Belding was DQ'ed for the same reason. This gaive the win to Clymens ahead of Perry, new point leader Hansen, Hayes and Brian Beard.
