THREE NOT TO BE FOR BURNEY LAMARFEATHERLITE SOUTHWEST SERIES
Source: Burry Dolbeare
ERIE, Colorado -- He won his fourth Bud pole of the year, set a new track record, led the first fifteen laps, but finished next to last. What started out with high hopes for Burney Lamar Saturday night at Colorado National Speedway, went down the tubes on lap 21 of the 150 lap Featherlite Southwest Series race before a packed house of over 14,000 fans. Going into the Series 12th race of the season, Lamar was the only Series driver with two wins, both consecutive, and was second in the Series point standings, 47 markers behind Eddy McKean. And he led the Series with three Bud Poles. When the 37 entrants had finished qualifying, Lamar was quickest with a new track record for the 3/8th's mile oval with a time of 15.736 seconds and/or 85.791 miles an hour. When the green flag dropped, Lamar jumped into the lead, which he held for the first 15 laps. Then Jim Pettit II went by, then Travis Clark went by, then Eddy McKean went by. On lap 21, Lamar and Chris Muhler got together coming out of turn two. When the smoke and dust had cleared, Lamar limped down the back chute and parked down between turns three and four. While it didn't look like heavy damage, the collision hurt something in the cars rear-end causing terminal damage to the drive-line.
As a result of his 25th place finish, Lamar is now third in the Series standings, 124 points behind third place race finisher Eddy McKean, and 4 points behind M. K. Kanke who started Saturday nights event 18th and finished 7th.
