TENINO, Washington -- Saturday, August 17th at South Sound Speedway, Dustin Wilkinson again captured a win with the NWSST. The FSCRA and Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks had action packed evenings and the WILROC Sprints made their first visit a memorable one.
Dustin Wilkinson was on a roll when he won the main event and qualified fastest with the NWSST. In the dash, Wilkinson nosed ahead of Larry Gaylord at the line to win. Jay Estes and Willy Thom captured heat race wins on the windy race night. On lap one of the main event, there was an accident involving Mark Potter, Larry Gaylord and Grant Smith. Smith was unable to return but Potter kept going and Gaylord returned 8 laps later. Willy Thom was still leading with Brian Overturf in second when a caution was thrown for Chris Schlaht who spun on turn two. It was Thom's bad luck that brought the caution on lap 15. As he came out of turn four, Thom lost a wheel and the lead he had held since the first lap. Overturf took over the lead but it wasn't long before Dustin Wilkinson got out to the front. He stayed there and after 35 laps was the winner. The only other cars on the lead lap were Overturf in second and Mike Aubrey in third. Fourth went to Jay Estes.
Brandon Tompkins showed off his stuff in the Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks. He took the fastest qualifying time and the A heat race. Justin Floreck took the B heat and Brian Wilson won the dash. Mike Saylors led the first four laps of the main event before Brandon Tompkins took over the lead. On lap five, David Dix took his car into the front stretch wall and was done for the night. Lap 11 brought out a caution for Brian Wilson spinning. It seemed to be bad luck for all. Mike Osborn, Curt Moon, Jake Petty and Justin Floreck all took their cars off the track between laps 12 and 18. Tompkins didn't let all that get in his way of a win. He battled with Eric Lee who was running second but managed to hold him off for the win. This was Tompkins second main win of the season. At the line, Dan Rhodes got in front of Lee for second. In fourth was Mike Brooks.
In the WILROC Sprints first visit to South Sound they made a great impression. All of the drivers are from north of the border. Jeff Montgomery qualified his sprint with an astounding 13.060 seconds on the 3/8ths mile. Britt Gillett and Mark Fisher won dashes while Jason Thomas and Gillett won heat races. Andrew Graham lead the main event for the first 11 laps until Darren Yates took over to win the race. In second was Jeff Montgomery. Britt Gillett, Rob Scott, and Andrew Graham rounded out the top five.
Earl Williamson clocked the fastest time for the FSCRA. John Grosvenor captured the dash and Scott Tiplady and Terry Rennick won heat races. Keith Van Dyne took the lead first in the main event. By lap nine, John Grosvenor was in the lead. He fought off Jim McKay for the next 17 laps before Earl Williamson got around McKay. Grosvenor tried to yield off Williamson but on the last lap, Williamson got around him for the win. Grosvenor finished second with McKay in third. Fourth was Scott Tiplady and Keith Van Dyne was fifth.
Next week, August 24th, at South Sound Speedway, the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series, presented by Dodge, will be back with the Late Model Super Stocks and Top Notch Trailer Street Stocks all getting in one more race night before their Championship in September. The Bumblebees and Figure-8 will also be on hand for all the fun. The NW Regionals for the MMRA Mini-Cups and Future Stars will be held on Saturday as well. Qualifying starts at 5:00 pm and racing gets under way at 6:30. Check out all the detailed info on www.southsoundspeedway.com.
