PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Ricky Carmichael clinched his third straight AMA Chevy Trucks 250 U.S. Motocross Championship Sunday at Millville, Minn., by winning his 10th Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross race in 10 starts this season. The 22-year-old factory Honda rider from Havana, Fla., has now won a total of eight AMA National championships with three AMA 125 Motocross and two AMA 250 Supercross Championships completing the tally. Remarkably, Carmichael has accomplished all of this in just six years of professional racing. He joins Broc Glover as the only other rider in AMA racing history to win a total of six AMA Motocross titles. Glover, a member of the Motorcycle Hall of Fame, was on hand to congratulate Carmichael Sunday.
This marks the earliest point in a season that the AMA 250 Motocross Championship has been won since Mike LaRocco earned the title in 1994 with two rounds remaining. Carmichael's championship is almost overshadowed by the fact that he continues to close in on the first perfect season in AMA Motocross history. RC now has only two rounds, or four motos, left to win to complete what could be the greatest single feat in the 30-year history of the series.
"I feel really proud to have been able to win the championship like this," said Carmichael, who joins Gary Jones and Tony DiStefano as the only riders who have won three straight AMA 250 Motocross titles. "Whatever I do from here on out this season is just icing on the cake. So many people were behind me, it was definitely a team effort."
You can catch Carmichael clinching his third AMA 250 Motocross title at Millville, Minn., on ESPN2, Saturday, Aug. 24 at 12 p.m., and again on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 5 a.m. Eastern. Be sure to check local listings as the air dates may change.
Carmichael left Millville with 26-career wins in the 250 class and has the opportunity to eclipse Bob Hannah's all-time mark of 27 yet this season. Carmichael is only 22-years-old and many pundits believe that he will eventually own just about every record in AMA Motocross and perhaps eventually even challenge many of Jeremy McGrath's AMA Supercross records. Already he is being mentioned as one of the best, if not the best, American motocross racer of all time.
This championship is just the latest in a long list of accomplishments for Carmichael. He is a former AMA Motocross Rookie of the Year and was named AMA/Speed Channel Pro Athlete of the Year for 2001. Although the championship has been won, all eyes are still on RC as he focuses on a perfect season.
