TENINO, Washington -- The NWSST and Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks ran the first of two nights on Saturday at South Sound Speedway. Joining the two classes were the Outlaw Compacts and WMRA.
Mike Aubrey took his yellow #51 to the fastest qualifying time of 16.16 in the NWSST. Right behind him was Dustin Wilkinson and Willy Thom who tied with 16.27. Wilkinson got his nose out front of the dash to win. Willy Thom and Chris Schlaht won the heat races for the class. The 50-lap main event started with Pete Kelly and Schlaht on the front row. Schlaht got out to the lead with Grant Baker right behind him. After the second lap, Schlaht came in hard to turn four and had his car sideways when Baker got into him causing a yellow. Schlaht went to the back of the pack and Baker was flagged for one lap. Kelly left the track with mechanical problems. CJ Thom led the next lap but Pat Schwartzkopf got around her to lead three laps. She ran in second for only one lap before her husband, Willy Thom got around her and by lap seven was also around Schwartzkopf to lead. Dave Cannon moved into second and ran there until Brian Overturf got around him for second. Lapped traffic came into play for Overturf when he tried for the lead but just couldn't get around the lapped cars and Willy Thom all at the same time. By lap 47, Thom, Overturf, Cannon and Mike Aubrey were the only cars left on the lead lap. Willy Thom was the winner and Brian Overturf was a close second. At the line it was Mike Aubrey who hit the gas to finish third, a nose in front of Cannon in fourth.
Brandon Tompkins was only fifteen-hundredths of a second away from beating the track record in the Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks. Mike Osborn won the trophy dash over Tompkins, Dan Rhodes and Amanda Easley. Mike Brooks and Justin Floreck each won their respective heat races. David Dix got out to the lead in the main event. Dix and Bobby Moore battled for the front position with Moore getting the lead for one lap out of seven before he spun. Brandon Tompkins then got out to the lead with Dix in second and Mike Brooks in third. On lap 14, Amanda Easley had to take her car off the track with a flat tire from going off the track earlier in the race. By lap 17, Dan Rhodes was in second with Brooks in third because Dix took his car off with major engine trouble. That's how it ended, Tompkins in first with Rhodes and Brooks in tow. In fourth was Mike Osborn who came back from the back of the pack after an early spin in the race. Curt Moon was fifth and Jake Petty had an outstanding night finishing in sixth.
Eric Kaas had an awesome night in the Outlaw Compacts. He was the fastest qualifier and won the dash. Pete Brady and Derek Sonnenberg each won a heat race. Bob Emerson got out the lead in the main event and never looked back. Sonny Kreger was running second until he got the black flag for spinning Kaas. Jim Milligan took over second spot with Wayne Dillon in third. Eric Kaas made his way back through the pack and got into third. On the last lap, Emerson was the winner and Kaas got around Dillon to finish second. Dillon was third and Milligan fourth.
Brad Curtis clocked in with a 14.003-second lap to nab the fastest qualifying time for the WMRA. Darrin Linder and Rob Lindsey won the dashes. Tony Seidelman and Linder also won heat races. The main event was run with no yellows and Rick Moss was the winner. In second was Darren Linder with Brad Curtis, Ken Ferris, and Mike Gardner rounding out the top five.
Sunday night at South Sound Speedway will have the NWSST and Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks back for another round along with the Bumblebees and Figure-8. Qualifying is at 5:00 pm with racing at 6:30. Monday will be the "Last Days of Summer 300" Enduro. The racing gets underway at 2 pm. Check out www.southsoundspeedway.com for pictures, results and information about upcoming events.
