MILLER WINS SUPER LATE MODEL “CEI 75”WHITE WINS FOURTH MAIN

September 7, 2002 – Mesa Marin Raceway – Tonight at Mesa Marin Raceway, Mike White won his fourth Late Model main event of 2002, Gary Elmore closed the Late Model point lead of Gene Fife to just two points and Brandon Miller won his fifth Super Late Model main and extended his point lead to four. White drove to back to back wins in the last two weekends by moving passed Elmore on lap 40 of the 50 lapper. Meanwhile Gene Fife was picking his way through the field to get close enough to maintain his lead in season’s points race and the chance for the champion to go to the Daytona 500. Fife broke into the top five and finished 4th behind Tom Devitt. Kevin James picked up the 5th place. Fife was able to maintain his points leadership, but in next week’s “CARQUEST Season Finale” Fife must finish ahead of Elmore to win the championship. The NASCAR Super Late Models returned after almost a six weeks break with several new competitors in the hunt for the Coors Light Challenge $10,000 bonus, including 2001 Champion Dan Holtz, Kevin Thompson, Tommy Fry, and Brett Landis. Brandon Miller posted fast time and was able to get to the front by lap 15 of the “CEI 75.” Miller was never seriously challenged and extended his lead over Mike Duncan to four points. Holtz and Thompson started on the front row. Thompson began to back-up once Miller drove on by. Holtz and Duncan followed him with Fry coming up fast. Duncan and Fry moved ahead of Holtz by lap 51 and Thompson and Barry Bradshaw were knocking on Holtz door to pass. By the checkered it was Miller, Duncan, Fry, Thompson and Holtz. Josh Horn has locked up his 2nd Championship in the NASCAR Street Stocks. He picked up another win tonight, but he didn’t get it easy. Lloyd Wren, Jr. had the lead until lap-20 of the 25-lap main event. David Hutchins won the fast time trophy dash was all hopes of winning the main ended on lap 7 when he hit the front straight-away wall. Behind Horn and Wren were Shane Thomas, Bernie Jamieson, and Darren Reed. In the AAA 911 Race for Youth Series Sheriff Gary Rhodes won the race, but DA Tracy Hamby had the save of the night making a 360 and continuing on his way. CHP Craig Whitty finished 2nd followed by BPD Elizabeth Lockhart, K.C. Fire Dept.’s Joe Mehciz and Park Ranger Robert Boardman. CEI President Paul Poor raced with the group and finished 7th. In the ChevronTexaco High School Racing Series Mike Bone of North High won his 1st race and also picked a win in the 3M Creeper Race. Mojave’s Chris Hillman challenged Bone until he spun on lap 10 and ended his chances for a 1st win. Tehachapi’s Nathan Nixon took 2nd and extended their points lead followed by Sean Craghead of Kern Valley and and Mojave. Next week’s CARQUEST Auto Parts Season Finale begins at 7:30. Tickets are $9 with kids 12 and under free.
