
SAN BERNARDINO, California -- It was a big night of racing Saturday night with a lot of popular divisions. In the Hornet class, points leader Danny Gutierrez in the #08 won the trophy dash. In Heat #1, the #18 of Stephannie Wilson started in the back and made her way to the front to take the checkered. Gutierrez came back after the dash to win Heat #2, and rounded out his night with a big win in the Main Event. Second was fast time qualifier Sky Lundy in the #01, with Tony Thompson in the #00 Honda finishing third. Fourth went to the #04 of Stan Younblood and fifth was Ronnie Everhart in the #17 Fiero.
Junior Hornets trophy dash was won by the #25 of Shawn Steele. In the main event Steele finished third behind the #87 of Kenny Christiansen, and taking another win was the #93 of Jeffrey Goddard. Richard Turner in the #15 Mazda finished fourth.
Setting fast time in qualifying for the Street Stock division was the #00 of Steve Smith, but in the Trophy Dash, the winner was the #29 of J.D. Reyes of Riverside, his first win in racing. The #13 of Steve Smith won the first Heat race, and the #11 of Lou Gamache won Heat race #2. In the main event, Gamache took the win, followed by the #00 of Smith. Matt Lauer in the #14 finished third in front of the #77 and the #16 of Ruben Duran out of San Bernardino.
Jason Estes in the #02 Monte Carlo out of Hemet set fast time in qualifying for the Bomber division. In the trophy dash Mike Reynolds in the #13 crossed the line first. Johnny Betzer won Heat race #1 and the #09 of Jimmy Rouse won Heat race #2. Ray Walker Sr. won the third heat race. Nineteen Bomber cars started the main event, but in the end it was Estes in the #02 in front. Estes was followed by Reynolds in the #13, the #40 of Harry Michaelian Jr., Dave Foster in the #23 Thunderbird, and Walker in the #59.
In Lady Bombers, Courtney Fowler in the #18 won the trophy dash, but in the Main event Stacy Meacham in the #02 Hemet Family Auto sponsored car was challenged by the #28 of Kellie Young the whole way. Meacham held on for the win followed by Young, Michelle Docks in the #09, Julie Carter in the #23, and finishing fifth was the #00 of Kim Unruh.
Late Models ran twin 30-lap races with Jeff Vonic striking first with a win in the trophy dash. Kenny Sapper started on the pole for both races, along with Gary Tamborelli on the outside. In both races Sapper was able to hold on to the position, but was challenged by Tamborelli all the way with Vonic close behind. In the end Sapper, Tamborelli and Vonic finished first-second-third in both mains. In the first main, finishing fourth was Kyle Whisner in the #0 and Randy Becker Jr. in fifth. Finishing fourth in the second main was the #87 of Ken Christiansen and fifth was the #17 of Mark McGuire out of Beaumont. Gary Tamborelli in the #30 is the repeating NASCAR Champion in the Late Model division for 2002. Congratulations Gary!
