NASCAR Winston West Series

There were those that thought Jerry Cain would not be racing the NASCAR Winston West in 2000, including Cain himself. But things change fast and Cain is now on his way to the series opener at Phoenix. He returns to compete with the same crew, the same car and the same hopes of winning that first race.
Cain will be trying to get a good starting position when qualifying for Saturday's race gets underway St. Paddy's day (Fri. March 17
). Should Cain be lucky enough to grab the pole, it won't be the first time. The 1998 season began with Cain in the prime spot when he picked up fast time for the day at Tucson.
RacingWest: Will you be racing the entire Winston West season or only select events?
Jerry Cain: It is our intention to race the full season. We have a new sponsor on board, Pugent Sound. Our website jerrycain.com will be going into detail about the sponsor soon.
RW: What are your goals this season?
JC: Our goal for the year is to have a sponsor for the full year, finish in the top 5, and win a race. Is that not everyone's goal?
RW: Have you made any changes on your team this year?
JC: We will be coming back with the same team and crew chief, Gary Collins. No substitute for experience. It is good to keep the same team. When team members know what each other is doing it eliminates mistakes and makes for great chemistry.
RW: What changes have you made with your car and/or where did you get your car?
JC: We are still running the 1999 bodies and will not make any changes. We are running a chassis set up that is a little on the edge.
RW: Do you feel your car is ready for the event?
JC: We sold off a few of our cars in the off season and rumors were that we were out. Not knowing if we had sponsors and having cars sit around an entire season did not seem sound. However at the last minute we picked up a sponsor and hope to compete the entire season. Unfortunately we sold our best speedway track car to Bill Sedgewicks team owner. We should however be competitive with the two cars that are still in our stable.
RW: Have you had an opportunity to test at PIR?
JC: We did not test phoenix, but we have raced their 6 times and have tested in the past. We feel that we will be okay with the practice sessions to get reacquainted.
RW: What are your feelings of the elimination of the points race in Japan?
JC: I think that eliminating Japan is practical. You will have a higher participation at a local race. I did not have the pleasure of racing Japan, but everyone that went had a great time and said the fans and track were great.
