LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Steve Portenga's return to the West Coast will start from the 24th position. Portenga earned the position in qualifying for the Las Vegas 350 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Saturday, October 12. The race is slated for Sunday, October 13.
"This wasn't' the way we wanted to start coming back to the West Coast" said Portenga, a Nevada native who now resides in Bakersfield, Calif. "I'm disappointed to be starting so far back, but I think we have a pretty good truck for the race. We think we can have a good race day in the Roto-Rooter Chevrolet."
The Las Vegas race is the first for Portenga since returning his team to its California headquarters. The team worked from a temporary base in Ohio for more than four months while the truck circuit raced primarily in the East and Midwest during the summer.
Portenga's qualifying lap was 34.559 seconds (156.225 miles per hour) around the 1.5-mile oval. David Starr won the pole at 33.106 (163.112).
The Las Vegas 350 starts at 5 p.m. EDT/2 p.m. PDT Sunday, October 13. The race is telecast live on ESPN and broadcast on the radio affiliates of the Motor Racing Network.
