Burney Lamar was one of the first cars slated to qualify, but mechanical problems kept him and his car on the garage asphalt instead of running the for the clock the team was running against the clock.
NASCAR Winston Cup driver Ken Schrader, always a threat at PIR, paced the 1-mile oval at 27.524; he appeared to have the car to beat as car after car went out and qualified, all failing to match his speed.
But finding time on their side, after al,l the No. 33 team sent Lamar back on track. The rising star didn’t even need two laps to take the pole away from the Cup star for Lamar's first lap was a 27.516 and his second lap although it likely did not count was even faster at 27.393.
Schrader had to settle for second behind the hot new talent with veteran winning driver Frank Maronski Jr. bringing it home in third.
