ROCKLIN, California -– Austin Cameron, who piloted the #16 NAPA AUTO PARTS Chevrolet to the winner’s circle at the Phoenix International Raceway in 2002, and the NAPA team are eager to defend that win. This marks the beginning of a campaign for the 50TH NASCAR Winston West Championship points race, which we are committed to bringing to NAPA AUTO PARTS a fourth title in the series.
Cameron is excited about the changes to the car for 2003 which includes a tire change for the NASCAR Winston West series.
“Goodyear has come on board in the Winston West series,” said Cameron. “The tire change is going to be a factor at the first race in Phoenix. Everyone is going to be wondering what to do because it’s going to be a whole different deal but with the team we’ve got… well; we’ve got the team to beat.”
Former NASCAR Winston West Champion, Doug George joins Bill McAnally Racing (BMR) as the shop manager and on race day, will be the crew chief for Cameron and the #16 NAPA AUTO PARTS/NAPA Belts & Hose Chevrolet team.
“In 1998,“continues Cameron, “in my very first Winston West race, I needed someone knowledgeable to put my car together. For that race, that person was Doug George who had left the west coast to pursue his career in NASCAR Craftsman Trucks. I had never driven a heavy car but the first time out; we were fast right off the trailer. Unfortunately, I made a rookie mistake and crashed it during the race but we made a big impact. I went on the win the Rookie of the Year title that year.”
“Doug George was most recently with Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck series,” said Cameron. “His knowledge and experience is astronomical. My confidence in him is huge. He is an awesome addition to this team.”
Cameron kept his fans on the edge of their seats last year by making some amazing passes and comebacks during the race; something he plans on continuing this year.
“Its part of my job,” said Cameron. “The fact we won half of the races last year, led the most laps for the season, and won the Bud Pole Award is pretty amazing. I am confident that we will be giving NAPA AUTO PARTS a championship in 2003. There’s going to be a lot of excitement this season with the addition of my new teammate Jim Inglebright driving the #20 JELLY BELLY/NAPA AUTO PARTS Chevrolet. Inglebright is going to be knocking on the door. We are both going to be battling for the win.
The “BOSCH Spark Plug 150” in Phoenix. Arizona will be on February 2, 2003 at 2 pm.
