FIELD: 42 cars possible. The fastest 30 cars through time trials with two provisional starting positions (31st & 32nd) available to the top 30 car owners based on the final 2002 Featherlite Southwest Series point standings, who have not qualified for one of the original 30 starting positions, provided eligible car owners cars attempt to qualify. The 33rd and 34th starting positions are available to the highest 30 drivers in the final 2002 Featherlite Southwest Series point standings who have not qualified for one of the original 30 starting positions. Provisional starting position 35th is available to any Featherlite Southwest Series past champion who competed participated as a river in 2002. Provisional starting position 36th is available to any of the top 30 car owners in the final 2002 Kodak SE Series owner standings. Provisional starting position 37th is available to any of the top 30 car owners in the final 2002 International Midwest Series owner standings. Provisional starting position 38th is available to any of the top 30 car owners in the final 2002 Raybestos Brakes NW Series owner standings. Starting positions 39th thru 42nd will be filled by the top four finishing drivers from the qualifying race electing to transfer.

2/02 RACE REVIEW: Dan Holtz won the Bud Pole Award with a time of 27.091to set a new track record and started the event on the pole. Holtz lost the handle exiting turn two which brought out a red flag as several drivers ended their day early. Once the race resumed, Ed Hoffman took control and led the first 22 circuits. Eddy McKean then assumed the point and led until lap 36. Wisconsin's Paul Menard led the next 19 laps until Ken Schrader past for the lead and led the final 57 laps en route to the victory.

SERIES NOTES:
  • 2002 Champion Eddy McKean plans to defend his Featherlite Southwest Series championship in 2002. Only Ron Hornaday Jr. has successfully defended a Featherlite Southwest Series championship (92, 93).

  • M.K. Kanke of Frazier Park, Calif. is the all-time leading money on the series with more than $340,000 in career winnings.

  • Bob Lyon of Agua Dulce, Calif. has started more Featherlite Southwest Series races then any other driver. At PIR, Lyon will make his 250th career start. He has 193 consecutive starts.

  • Darrell LaMoure returns to the series after recuperating from a neck injury sustained in a pre-season testing accident at PIR in January 2002. LaMoure continues to bring awareness to the public regarding missing children through his Racing for the Missing program. LaMoure has teamed with long-time sponsor NAPA Auto Parts and Yerf-Dog Fun Karts for a full campaign in 2003.

  • Since 1988, six drivers have multiple wins on the d-shaped oval. Scott Hansen (4), Rick Carelli (4), Ken Schrader (3), Garrett Evans (2), Dick Trickle (2), and Ron Hornaday Jr. (2).

  • 2001 Series champion Craig Raudman returns to the series after sitting out much of 2002. Raudman formed a new team during the past year and will attempt to become the third driver in series history to win a second championship. Only Ron Hornaday Jr. and Steve Portenga have won more than one series championships with two apiece.

  • More than 60 cars from all of NASCAR's four Regional Late Model Touring series have pre-registered for this annual event including Ed Hoffman, Stanley Smith, Erik Darnell, Jason Hogan, John Dillon, and Jason Jefferson. Jefferson will introduce the first Dodge Intrepid to compete in a NASCAR Regional Touring event.

  • Featherlite Southwest Series drivers and teams will greet race fans at Speedway Raceway Indoor Karting Center at 2425 21st Street, Phoenix AZ on Friday, January 31 at 7pm for Go-Kart racing, barbecue, and autograph session.

  • Hoosier Racing Tire Company has posted award tires for all events in 2003, which include 32 tires to be distributed to eligible Featherlite Southwest Series, NASCAR Touring car owners per event.
