CARSON CITY, Nevada -- The Champion Motor Speedway located in Carson City, Nevada has announced that the Supermodified Racing League (SRL) will return once again to the historic high-banked 1/3-mile asphalt oval on Saturday night, August 2.

This year’s event at CMS will also include a custom car display, parade laps, smoky burnout showdown, and best appearing car contest. August 2 is also the opening weekend for the Hot August Night show in Reno. As a result there will be plenty of classic cars in and around the Carson City area.

“We picked this weekend primarily because of the annual Hot August Night celebration up in Reno”, said CMS General Manager Jeb Onweiler. “A lot of the custom cars and hot rods will be up at Lake Tahoe on Friday night (August 1) for a kick-off function. On Saturday they can stop in Carson City for the evening, enjoy the SRL show, and then drive up to Reno for the beginning of Hot August Nights. I think the date has tremendous potential as an annual stop for the Supermodified Racing League.” This will be the only appearance this season for the ground-pounding winged warriors in the Northern Nevada region. In celebration of the Champion Motor Speedway’s 40th anniversary, the SRL has scheduled a special “Fast Forty” 40-lap feature main event.

Drivers returning for the new season include multi-time Supermodified Champion, four times Copper World Champion, and IRL Indy Car Series veteran Davey Hamilton, who is returning to racing after suffering severe injuries at the Texas Motor Speedway in June of 2001. Also returning is three time Copper World Champ and multi-time Supermodified Champion Troy Regier who has moved to a new team for 03’. Lonnie Adamson, the 02’ Copper World Winner and defending SRL Champ is also returning.

Other top ten pilots returning are Carson City native Eric Silsby, Bob Bigioni, Jim Birges, Rick Veenstra, Dale Lamborn, Jeff Russell, and Darren Rusconi.

“We’ve been racing in Carson City for several years now and we’re real excited about continuing that tradition” said SRL president Davey Hamilton. “I’ll also be racing at Champion Motor Speedway on August 2, and I’m expecting a super-strong field of SRL racers to join me on the high banks. The entire SLR tour always enjoys visiting the Carson City area, and this years show should be better then ever.”

Also joining the 03’ tour will be multi-time 360 Supermodified Champ Jim Tartaglia, SRL Lites Rookie of the Year Bobby Dalton, A.J. Russell from the 360 ranks, and NCMA veteran Gordon Rogers.

There are several new teams also planning to run an abbreviated schedule. Drivers competing in the tour hail from California, Nevada, Washington, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Texas, and North Carolina (via Indiana). In fact, it’s rumored that 2002 NASCAR Winston Cup Champion Tony Stewart will pilot the Supermodified he recently bought from Davey Hamilton for at least two SRL shows this year. Tony is familiar with the car having driven it one year at the Copper World and at a Madera Speedway show.

The 02’ Supermodified Racing League Season was action-packed with exciting races featuring epic battles involving Silsby, Regier, Adamson, Birges, and Veenstra. With Davey Hamilton, Jim Tartaglia, and NASCAR superstar Tony Stewart tossed into the mix, the 03’ season promises to be even more exciting.

The SRL awarded over $200,000 (point and contingency funds) to 49 racers who competed in the 02’ series. The marketing partners and sponsors contributing to the upcoming 03’ SRL tour include: Don Olson Racing Products, Total Seal, Sunoco Racing Fuels, Sierra Racing Products, Peterson Fluid Systems, Hoosier Tire West, Western Speed and Fuel, Brodix, Eibach Springs, Beam Helmet Designs, Sander Engineering, Print Werx, Creative Communications, Finishline Racing Equipment, Frank's Radio Services, and Five Star Racecar Bodies.
