** USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series: Jay Fogleman held off pole sitter Shane Huffman at the end to win the Food City 250 at Lonesome Pine Raceway in Coeburn, Virg. The event was a Northern Division race.
Huffman, who leads the Southern Division standings, finished just .972 of a second behind the winner. He set the pace in Advance Auto Parts Pole Award qualifying with a lap averaging 81.937 mph around the high-banked 3/8-mile oval.
Kertus Davis finished third, Jason McLellan was fourth and Eric Corbett took fifth. Davis and Corbett are now tied for second in the Northern Division standings with 280 points each. Brian Ross leads the division with 295 tallies.
** NASCAR Winston West Series: Steve Portenga passed Winston Cup star Ken Schrader with eight laps remaining, then pulled away to win the Pontiac Wide Track Grand Prix 200 at California Speedway in Fontana, Calif.
Portenga said, “The Goodyear tires were awesome today.”
Schrader finished second, 2.429 seconds behind the winner. Kevin Richards was third, Johnny Borneman took fourth and open wheel racing veteran Bryan Herta was fifth. It was Herta’s first stock car race.
Borneman won the Bud Pole Award with a lap averaging 173.544 mph.
Portenga used the win to take the lead in the championship standings.
** Busch North Series: Andy Santerre won the Freedom 150 at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, NH. It was the second straight victory at the 3/8-mile oval for Santerre.
Kelly Moore finished second. Joey McCarthy, who went the 150-lap distance on one set of Goodyear Eagles, took third. Tim Andrews finished fourth and Mike Stefanik was fifth.
Santerre won the Bud Pole Award with an average speed of 86.124 mph. He is tied with Winston Cup star Ricky Craven at third on the all-time series list with 15 poles.
The race was the season opener for the series.
** Sprints On Dirt: Darren Long won the season opener at Crystal Motor Speedway in Crystal, Mich. The CMS venue is a 3/8-mile semi-banked clay oval.
Mike Woodring was second, Jim Wohlfeil took third, Jim Gall was fourth and Mark Steman round off the top five.![]()
