ZARETZKE FOUR IN A ROWEVERGREEN SPEEDWAY
Source: Evergreen Speedway
Zaretzke approached the night with no worries. “The car’s feeling pretty good right now. We’ve gotta few changes we made after the last practice session. Right now I‘m hoping the weather holds off and we get a win.”
The rain did hold off and he did get the win he wanted, more than once. Zaretzke took the Super Stock Dash and in the Super Stock A-Main came on for the win despite touching Matt Murphy’s car. He later competed in the Super Figure Eight but after holding second place for a lap or two, succumbed to damage and did not finish the run.
In fact, there was a lot of touching and bumping going on Saturday night and not just in the Figure 8’s. Race fans might have been excused for thinking the Super Stocks A Main had turned into an extreme contact. The red flag was flying when Dan Beecher ran afoul of the outside wall at turn four. The crowd was silent as emergency crews hurried to the crumpled car. Cheers erupted when Beecher finally managed to extract himself and walk to the ambulance. Joey Decker and Joe Constance, who eventually took second and third in the Super Stock A-Main made contact early on. Constance pulled out of a wobble and recovered, keeping Decker in his sights for the rest of the race. Doug Davidson and Scott Sarto rounded out the top five. Matt Murphy and last years champion Tom Moriarity continue to have the early season blues, Murphy qualified fourth quick in his new Port City Monte Carlo and went to the outside, he moved up to second spot by lap 8 and had passed all the cars on the outside, Murphy and Zaretzke touched in turn four on the 18th lap with Murphy sliding up the track and losing many positions. Once the track went back green Murphy could not get the car hooked back up. Moriarity’s night ended early as he left the track on lap 30 with mechanical problems, Moriarity set fast time earlier in the evening and had moved up to fourth spot from his tenth starting spot.
The NASCAR Randy’s Ring and Pinion Bombers race was not without drama. Naima Lang, who won the Bombers dash, ended up leaving the A-Main on the hook after a lap two crash. Travis Blackwood was given the black flag for starting the accident when he turned second running Jim Foti. Steve McElroy took over the top spot on lap 8 from Charles Davis and never looked back, Dirk Kruiswyk and Jason Fraser battled for the last ten laps with Kruiswyk barely holding off Fraser for second, Davis hung on for fourth while Bill Mann rounded out the top five for his second straight top five finish. Points leader Kyle Cooley retained the points lead despite having transmission problems and finished twelfth
Figure 8 racing is never dull. Rick Dietz took the Super Figure 8 dash. Steve Peters won the Super F8 A-Main with Steve Cox finishing second, Cox had to come form the back of the pack after winning the B-Main, Rick Curtis finished third with points leader Shane Sawin in fourth and John Carlson in fifth.. Merlin Cook was first in the Extreme F8. Four-year veteran Troy Simianer of Bothell finished in second place, with Perry Huffman, Jason Britton and Noah Chandler the top five The swarm returned to Evergreen Speedway on Saturday May 17. Love ‘em or hate ‘em the yellow and black Hertz Hornets exploded from the grid looking for the low groove. Bill Wade of Stanwood came in first after finishing third the previous week.
It was mascot night Saturday at the Evergreen Speedway. Speedway Mascot Racey Raccoon expressed his high hopes of finishing first prior to the F8 foot race. After all, he couldn’t do worse. He’d never won. But Racey’s loosing streak came to an end as he outstripped Papa John’s Slicey and Mariner High‘s Splash to win. Other than a little contact with the Snohomish High Panthers, Racey finished the race unscathed.
