OUTLAW COMPACT CHALLENGE SERIES ENGULFS SOUTH SOUND

The Outlaw Compact Challenge Series made its first stop at South Sound Saturday Night. The NW Bump to Pass and WESCO Sprints made their first stops of the season. The Mini-Cup Open Division and Future Stars were also on hand for the fun.

Merle Owens of Port Angeles clock in fastest for the Outlaw Compacts. Jerry Buell won the B dash while Eric Angeledes won the A dash. Buell also won the B heat race with Thom VanGesen and Tim Garske close behind. Jim Perry won the A heat race followed by Bob Klos and Pete Brady. Eric Angeledes and Jim Perry started on the front row of the main event. Angeledes got out to the lead with Perry in second and Brady in third. Brady jumped into second on lap three but Perry got back around him by lap eight. Tim Garske left the track on lap six and Jeff Barcale left on lap eight. Mike Hayne drove off the track on lap eight. On lap 14 Jim Perry took over the lead from Eric Angeledes. Tom Keehan headed off on lap 15 and Merle Owens pulled into the center on lap 17. Owens was running fourth when he pulled in with a blown motor. Jerry Buell exited on lap 28. On lap 32, Pete Brady got around Eric Angeledes for second. Wayne Dillon was running in fourth where he had been most of the race. Vicki Shaffer pulled off on lap 33 with motor problems. After forty laps, Jim Perry was the winner with Pete Brady, Eric Angeledes, Wayne Dillon and Scott Earsley. Jeff Long finished sixth with Bob Klos in seventh and Freeman Pruitt in eighth.

The NW Bump to Pass brought out eight cars. William Pearce was the fastest qualifier. Sean Wolk won the dash after the other three cars went off with flat tires. They were Lonny Wolk, Bryce Kolar and Pearce. Joyce Jasper led all eight laps of the heat race. Lonny Wolk finished second and Bryce Kolar was third. Jasper also led all 15 laps of the main event and delivered the only spin of the race to David McCarroll. Chad Carstens ran second for five laps before Lonny Wolk took over. Rob Putnam moved into third on lap eight. Jasper drove her pink piggy car to a victory with Lonny Wolk, Rob Putnam, William Pearce, and Bryce Kolar in tow.

JR Ray nearly swept the WESCO Sprints. He qualified fastest setting the track record at 13.13 and won the dash. On the first lap, Mike Humphrey got into the wall and had to be towed off the track. Ray also left the track with a problem. Bert Johnson won the heat with Glen Walker in second and Jim Walker in third. Humphrey made it back out in the main and led the first four laps before JR Ray took over. Humphrey stayed in second with Glen Walker in third. Jim Walker spun with Bert Johnson on lap 15. Each lost a lap. After 25 laps, JR Ray was the winner with Mike Humphrey, Glen Walker, Rich Leighty, Rick Leighty, Bert Johnson and Jim Walker.

Tom Phillips was the fastest qualifier for the Mini-Cup Open division. Dan Larson Sr. won the dash and Patrick Phillips won the heat race. Patrick Phillips led all 25 laps of the main event. Dave Vanderpol was in second for five laps until James Sullivan took over. Daniel Moore moved into third on lap 13. Patrick Phillips won with James Sullivan, Daniel Moore, Tom Phillips and Dan Larson Sr. in the top five. Cody Stewart was fastest qualifier for the Future Stars. Brooke Lefor was the dash and heat race. Lefor led the first eight laps of the main event before Cody Stewart took over. Steven Roberts moved into second. Stewart was the winner with Roberts in second to finish. Lefor was third. Mat Cone finished fourth followed by Harrison Scherer and Austin Thom.

Next weekend at South Sound Speedway will feature the Sportsman, Late Model Super Stocks, Top Notch Trailers Street Stocks and Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks. Qualifying will begin at 5:00 with racing set for 6:30. Check out www.southsoundspeedway.com for all your racing needs.
