TENINO, Washington -- Two streaks were broken Saturday night, June 28th, at South Sound Speedway in the Top Notch Trailers Street Stocks and Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks. New winners were seen in the Late Model Super Stocks and Sportsman.
JJ Hamilton was the fast qualifier in the Top Notch Trailers Street Stocks.
During the trophy dash, Jim Swanson led the first three laps but on the final lap Dan Woodward got a nose in front of him at the line for the win.
Bill Posh, Jr. won the B heat race over Mark Bradley and Mike Brooks. JJ Hamilton won the A heat race with Steve Ford and Ron Ehli in close behind.
Mark Bradley led the first three laps of the main event with Mike Brooks in second. Manney, who had earlier broken his transmission in practice, was able to take the lead with JJ Hamilton and Dan Woodward close behind, thanks to his great crew. Steve Ford moved into fourth and Bill Posh into fifth.
On lap six Mike Brooks left the track for a water leak, causing the first yellow of the race. On lap 13 the second yellow was thrown for Mark Bradley and Ron Ehli who got together. Bradley got a flat tire when he went into the wall coming out of turn two. Hamilton made many moves on Manney to try and get the lead but couldn’t get around him. Mike Brooks returned to the track on lap 29. After 35 laps, Manney broke Dan Woodward’s four race winning streak. JJ Hamilton was second with Dan Woodward, Steve Ford, and Bill Posh Jr. close behind. Ron Ehli, Mike Taylor, Andy Rausch, and Mike Brooks rounded out the top ten.
Bobby Moore was the fastest Hinkle Homes Pure Stock on Saturday night. Josh Zahn won the dash. Charlie Manier led all eight laps of the B heat race.
Justin Floreck was second and Mark Rorvik was third. Brandon Walker won the A heat followed by Bobby Moore and Eric Lee. Before a lap could be complete of the 25-lap main event Dave Crawford spun and got in to the wall. He was sitting in turn two when new driver Devon Hundley had nowhere to go and slammed into him. Neither could complete the race. Hundley had major damage to the front of his car. The race restarted and Brandon Walker and Jim Moen were the first out front. Eric Lee moved into third with Josh Zahn in fourth. Lap eight brought a yellow for Bobby Moore who spun. Charlie Manier left the track the next lap with a handling problem. Josh Zahn moved into third on lap nine and then Brandon Tompkins took over on lap ten. Jim Moen stayed strong in second until he pulled off on lap 20 with a flat tire. Brandon Walker was still leading but now with Brandon Tompkins in second and Josh Zahn was third. The race went to 25 laps and the checkered flew for Brandon Walker the 16-year-old Rookie from Longview. Brandon Tompkins was second with Josh Zahn in third. Tompkins and Zahn had been the only winners in the class so far this season. Dan Walker was fourth and Eric Lee brought in a fifth place finish.
Nick Behn clocked in with the fastest time for the Late Model Super Stocks, only 1/100th of a second faster than Bob Presley. Troy Conrad beat out Eric Tibbitts for the dash win. Kevin Carver hit the wall during practice and his crew worked feverishly to get it back together. They used many safety laps but he was only able to complete 20 laps of the main event. Carver needs of change of luck as this is one of several mishaps that have stopped him from being the top five contender that he is. Dan Rhodes and Bryan Wiener set the front row of the main event for the Late Model pack. It was Troy Conrad however that got out to the lead. Eric Tibbitts fell in behind him with Wiener in third. But, on lap eight, Tibbitts fell back and exited the raceway. It was found out later that he had blown another motor. This was the second motor in as many races. Tibbitts also seem to need that change of luck. Bryan Wiener who was in third, slowed on the same lap and left on lap 12 with some mechanical problems. Wiener attempted many more times to get laps in but just couldn’t keep his car running well. On lap 23, Conrad went in too hot and spun himself out of the lead. He got himself collected and didn’t lose a lap. Bob Presley was now in the lead with Wes Rhodes and Nick Behn close behind. Lap 28 brought the first caution, which was for Tim Gosch and Dan Rhodes who were running side by side for fourth place. The two got together but collected themselves back up and didn’t lose a lap.
Before another green lap was complete Bob Presley spun in some oil in turn one and two and took himself into the wall. Wes Rhodes took over the lead and stayed there until lap 39 when Nick Behn took over. By this time, Troy Conrad had moved up to third. Rhodes held onto second until lap 57 when Conrad took over. Another caution came on lap 60 when Troy Eaton got into Dan Rhodes. Each lost a lap in the incident. Another yellow on lap 71 was for debris in turn three. It was cleaned up and the green flew. With a not so gentlemanly move by Conrad, he got around Behn for the lead on lap 74.
Lap 79 brought another caution for Troy Eaton getting into Jimmy Clair. The final yellow was again for Eaton getting into Clair resulting in Eaton’s second black flag of the race. One hundred laps from the first green, it was Troy Conrad, Nick Behn and on the last lap, Tim Gosch got third from Wes Rhodes. Chad Hinkle was fifth and Randy Dalebout was sixth.
In the Sportsman class, Al Carver qualified fastest while Greg Greer won the dash. Frank Clark and Dale Holland won the A and B heats respectively.
Brian Vaughn led the first lap of the Sportsman main event before he exited, leaving it open for Brian Roth. Brandon Taylor, who was unable to make it to qualifying, left the track on lap four. On lap eight, the first yellow came out. It was for Dale Holland and Bernie Hindman who spun. Hindman exited the track. Roth fell out of the lead on lap twelve when Jerry Clark took over. Greg Greer was in third. Al Carver left on lap 17 and Tony Malar left on lap 18, both with mechanical problems. Then John Boyatt and Ken Gummus had moved into third and fourth. After 35 laps, Jerry Clark had his first win of the season with Brian Roth in second and Boyatt in third.
Ken Gummus was fourth and Frank Clark was fifth.
