It was Craftsman Night July 5th at the Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, WA. The Independence Day weekend crowds watched eagerly as Scott La Cross took the NASCAR Mini-Stocks feature. The winner of the Randy’s Ring & Pinion Bombers was Duane Schosboek. FEAR ruled for the second night running with Shane Sawin taking the checkered flag for the Super F-8 win. The Xtreme Contact F8 winner was Merlin Cook of Arlington. The women’s F8 feature was taken by Wendy Boyd.

The NASCAR Mini Stocks returned to the Speedway with Scott La Cross and Nat Barber tied for top season points. Bob Edwards established an early lead. Doug Hinds went into the wall in Lap 5 bringing out the red flag and a tow truck. Edwards maintained a huge lead until a yellow flag brought up the field in Lap 24. Edwards was chased by Dave Ramey until Scott La Cross decided to get serious. La Cross passed first Ramey then Edwards to take the checkered flag. Edwards held second with Ramey third and Nat Barber in fourth.

The Randy’s Ring and Pinion Bombers started with an exciting B Main. Frank Cowgill and Darin Stordahl took first and second and opted to move up to the A Main. John Burtsche had the pole position for the A Main feature. Burtsche and Craig Szweda stayed side by side through Lap 5 when Szweda pulled into the lead. Charles Davis challenged Szweda and stayed attached to his bumper through Lap 13 when a mid pack tangle of several cars brought out the EMTs. Drivers Bill Mann and Bill Eddy walked to the ambulance for evaluation but Eddy’s car wasn’t so lucky. Mann continued the race from the rear of the field. Travis Blackwood moved up to second as the race resumed while Duane Schosboek moved into third. By Lap 25 Schosboek was side by side with Szweda and Naima Lang had emerged from near the back of the field into third. Lang pushed into second by Lap 28 and Szweda fell back. Schosboek took the checkered flag with Lang second, Szweda third and Jason Fraser fourth.

The Super F8 A Main was a 30 lap feature. Wendi Boyd held the first five laps until Steve Peters pushed up for the lead. Shane Sawin stayed hard on Peters’ bumper until he saw his chance to move in on Lap 28. Sawin passed Peters cleanly in the confusion at the intersection and went on for the win. Peters took second, with John Carlson third and Doug Wilkinson fourth.

Xtreme Contact F8s burst away with Jason Holton on the pole. Geoff Chandler pulled away for the lead on the first turn while Merlin Cook pushed his way through the crowd for second position. Cook kept aggressively chasing Chandler and took the lead by the seventh lap. Perry Huffman and Troy Simianer slid into second and third and the three drivers held onto those positions until the checkered flag. Jason Holton and Nick Niesen rounded out the field in fourth and fifth.

A Women’s F8 feature saw Wendy Boyd rip out for a lead. Andrea Sukut stayed on the bumper of Jessica Wilkinson who was in second. The ladies showed grace and skill in the intersection, finishing the race without contact. Boyd took the checkered flag, Wilkinson was second, Sukut third and Kim Dietz finished in fourth.

An evening at Evergreen officially begins with dashes. The Mini-Stock Dash winner was Dave Ramey of Everett with Naima Lang, also of Everett, taking the trophy for the Bombers class. The Super F8 Dash winner was John ’Cowboy’ Carlson of Snohomish while Perry Huffman of Everett took the Xtreme F8 Dash. The Hornet Dash was won by Adrian Craig.

The class with a cult-like popularity in Monroe is the Hertz Hornets. This night there were three features to accommodate the sea of yellow and black entries. The winner of the first 20 lap main was David Dixon after a fierce battle with Greg Hibma. The second main of the night saw Billie Williams earn a trophy. A Hornets Grudge Match featured Dodge dealers behind the wheel. Rich Butenschoen of Bellingham Chrysler took the checkered flag. Todd Lynch of BBC Dodge followed with Sean Connely of Tom Matson Dodge in third.

Another crowd pleaser at the Evergreen Speedway is the Gauntlet Race. The driver of this shortened school bus tries to evade a swarm of chase cars. Fortunately, the Evergreen Crew makes sure the Gauntlet Bus is filled with an adequate supply of garbage and rotten produce to pitch at the attack cars. The last time the Gauntlet Bus took to the track with Steve ‘Battlewagon’ Peters at the wheel, it suffered a short sharp defeat and was promptly rolled on it’s side. Peters was keen for revenge. The chase cars managed to pin the Gauntlet after three and a half laps on the F8.

Join us at the Evergreen Speedway Sat. July 12 for the NASCAR Raybestos Brakes Series Parts Plus 125 Northwest Tour. It’s a great opportunity to meet the tour drivers and enjoy accelerated NASCAR action! The support race of the evening is the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Super Stocks feature presented by Dodge.
