KEN SCHRADER SCORES TOP STARTING POSITION FOR PONTIAC WIDE TRACK 200 AT CALIFORNIA SPEEDWAYNASCAR Winston West Series
Source: Janet Peery
It has not always been easy for the NASCAR Winston Cup drivers when they compete in the west. Yes, the horsepower and the bonus of a crew that works on cars fulltime is a plus. And yes, there have been the Winston Cup drivers that join the competitors of the west and win the event. But the truth is when the NASCAR Winston Cup drivers join the race, the racing is even better. They are the rabbit for the regulars to chase. And some drivers have been very foxy at hunting those drivers down. Perhaps one of the most exciting races in the recent history of the Winston West took place when NASCAR was still running the very popular Winter Heat series. The event saw a late race battle with Butch Gilliland and Schrader going door to door for the final laps before Gilliland finally won the Tucson race in a photo finish. The last Winston West event, The Orleans 150 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, had Schrader sent to the back of the pack for changing a motor after qualifying. The fans had hoped to see him move his way to the front and challenge the likes of Brendan Gaughan and John Metcalf, but car problems took him out of contention early. Maybe things will be different this week. Don't miss this race! The odds may be on the Cup drivers to win, but if a Winston West driver crosses the stripe first, then you can bet it was talent, determination and a hard working team that made the victory happen. 1. (55) Ken Schrader, Pontiac Grand Prix, 180.424.
