LAKEPORT, California -- The 4th annual "Robinson Rancheria Bingo and Casino Tri-State Challenge" was held at the Lakeport Speeday Saturday night with Grants Pass, Oregon driver Randy Hvall taking the $1500 win making it his second victory at Lakeport . Hvall also won the event in 2001.

The Tri-State late model field was reduced to only 10 after Junior Roddy of Gualala broke a shock, hit the wall and burst into flames in hot laps. Kelseyvilles David Sullivans car was also side-lined in hot laps with a blown engine.

The small field did not create a lack of excitement, however, and with an eight-car inversion, there was plenty of passing. Local driver Kevin Estep pulled ahead of pole setter Brad Wasmund at the drop of the green flag and as Wasmund experienced power surges, Hvall, Kyle Cattanach of Redding and Lakeports Jeremy Hopkins also gained position.

With only four laps down, 2002 winner Rick Spencer of Eugene, Oregon moved high in attempt to pass Fortunas Luke Hall. Andrew Snider of Kelseyville poked his nose in the hole, and when Spencer tried to get back in line the two made contact with both spinning. Spencer retired to the pits with body damage and Snider continued at the rear.

The restart saw Hvall pull ahead of Estep, and five rounds later Cattanach swapped places with Estep. Hopkins followed Cattanach to the front, and Tri-State points leader David Miller of Coquille, Orgon drove around Estep for fourth on lap 16.

The race was slowed a second time on lap 22 when Halls car developed a water leak and he would not adhere to the black flag. When racing resumed Hvall and Cattanach pulled away from the field with Hopkins and Miller battling for third and fourth.

At the mid point of the 60-lapper Cattanach pulled along side to challenge Hvall, and the leaders ran side-by-side the next 10 laps. Lapped traffic forced Cattanach to pull back in line. The caution fell again on lap 42 when Klamaths Hank Hilton spun on the front stretch.

The final circuits went without incident with Hvall claiming his second Tri-State win at Lakeport. Cattanach finished a strong second earning $850 with Hopkins a $750 third. Miller finished fourth with Estep fifth and Snider sixth. Scott Sirois, general manager of Robinson Rancheria Bingo and Casino, congratulated Hvall and presented him with the Tri-State Challenge winners trophy.

Hvall and Miller were heat race winners. Hopkins set fast time of 12.378, and Miller won the fast qualifiers trophy dash.
