ROCKLIN, California -- Bill McAnally Racing celebrated a victory at the Stockton 99 Speedway as driver Austin Cameron and the #16 NAPA AUTO PARTS Chevrolet crossed the finish line to win the "NAPA 200". This is the first visit for the NAPA AUTO PARTS team to Winner's Circle in 2003. Austin Cameron won the Bud Pole Award by recording a time of 14.135 seconds, breaking the previous track record by .340 seconds and also led 155 of the 207 laps with a green-white-checkered finish.
"We're back! We just took a little vacation," laughs Cameron. "We had just an awesome night. The car was great. I had a pretty good foothold on the first part of the race when I made an error. We thought a yellow was coming out because a car was up against the wall. I was being cautious and backed off a bit and another car got under me. Whoops! At the restart, I just watched him and noticed he was using 100% of his car. So I just rode behind him and as we got mixed up in lapped traffic, I had a good opportunity to regain the lead. That was pretty much the rest of the story."
"The NAPA team did awesome at the halfway stop. All we had to do was adjust a little bit of the air pressure. The second set of tires was even better than the first. The team made my job easy. It was a great night for NAPA AUTO PARTS."
"I'm feeling pretty good," said crew chief, Doug George. "The #16 NAPA AUTO PARTS car was just awesome. The NAPA team did really great job. We haven't had the best of seasons. Nobody has given up and I have to take my hat off to the team. We couldn't be happier as a team and we'll take this car to Salt Lake City."
Team owner, Bill McAnally was equally pleased.
"It's good to have Austin back," comments McAnally. "We're glad we could do this for our sponsor, NAPA AUTO PARTS. We felt we had let them down all this year. They're used to winning as this NAPA team is used to winning and it feels good to be back in Victory Circle."
The fight for those valuable NASCAR Grand National Division Winston West Championship points continued for the #20 JELLY BELLY team as they began the race at the Stockton 99 Speedway by qualify the car in fifth with a time of 14.281. The JELLY BELLY team was charging to the front to challenge their teammate when at lap 65 the #20 JELLY BELLY Chevrolet experienced a mechanical problem.
"We're not sure what happened," said driver Jim Inglebright. "We were going down the front straightaway when the JELLY BELLY Chevrolet just quit. We lost power. We couldn't get it back. Come to find out, it had something to do with the battery connection. The JELLY BELLY team got it going and we got back out unfortunately about 40 laps down."
"We had a great race car," continued Inglebright. "The #20 JELLY BELLY Chevrolet just had a mechanical problem. We're going to turn this thing around and put the JELLY BELLY car back on the podium at the race at Salt Lake City."
The #20 JELLY BELLY team was able to regain some of the lost laps in the second half of the race and completed 171 of the 207 laps, finishing the night in 15th place. This moves the #20 JELLY BELLY team to 8th in the championship point's race.
"We just can't get a break," said team owner, McAnally. "We've just back ourselves in a corner. Unfortunate circumstances of being in the wrong place at the right time caused us to wreck a lot of race cars and the team has been working hard getting cars prepared for the race. It's always been something little that been biting us. We will get it worked out. We've worked through this before and we'll put the #20 JELLY BELLY Chevrolet back on the podium. I want to thank our sponsor JELLY BELLY for their continued support. They were here cheering us on along with JELLY BELLY fans and we really appreciate it."
The next event will be on August 30, 2003 in Salt Lake City, Utah at the Rocky Mountain Raceway for the "NAPA 200". The race from the Stockton 99 Speedway will be televised on SPEED on August 30. Check your local listings.
