Evergreen State Fair crowds in Monroe, WA enjoyed the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series and the Randy’s Ring & Pinion Figure 8 Nationals on Sat. Aug. 23. Steve Peters of Kirkland won the 100-lap F8 feature. The Super Stocks checkered flag went to John Zaretzke of Maltby who won his seventh feature of the year and closed the points battle to within one point of Tom Moriarity. The NASCAR Mini Stocks feature went to Scott LaCross of Kenmore. Randy’s Ring & Pinion Bomber driver Frank Cowgill won for that division.

Over the last several weeks, all eyes have been on the battle between John Zaretzke and defending track champion Tom Moriarity. Last week saw Moriarity ahead in the point standings. Fairgoers were delighted to see Zaretzke make an unscheduled appearance on Friday to test a new engine in preparation for Saturday’s race. But during the Super Stocks dash, Zaretzke proved over-eager. He pushed inside of Moriarity, sending the track champion into a spin and earning a black flag for himself.

Fans watched anxiously to see if the aggression was going to follow the drivers into the Main Super Stocks feature. Drama hit almost immediately as Moriarity broke on turn three and took himself into the dirt. The mishap landed him in the back of the field. He was able to pick off four positions in a single lap. Zaretzke had moved into the third position by lap 15. Roger Habich had been holding the lead with Shane Harding a strong second. Lap 20 saw Moriarity receive some contact from Lex Johnson, losing some of the car lengths he had worked so hard to gain. Zaretzke, meanwhile, passed Harding for the number two position and started his relentless advance on Habich. Zaretzke and Habich passed the lead back and forth from lap 37. It’s doubtful that either was aware that Moriarity had once again moved up. He achieved the fourth position. Zaretzke took the checkered flag. Habich, Harding, Moriarity and Matt Murphy rounded out the field.

The 100 lap Randy’s Ring & Pinion Figure 8 Nationals race brought out lots of veteran drivers. The B Main race was won by Mike Bergstrom. Arnold Freshour took second. Both drivers moved up to the A Main. Twenty-six cars started in the FEAR race but not all finished. Driver of the week Shane Sawin shot forward for an early lead which was wrested from him by Steve “Battlewagon” Peters. Sawin stayed on Peters’ bumper. Steve Cox was right behind. Sawin grabbed the lead back on lap 56. Cox was taken out in a collision on lap 65. Two laps later, Sawin was involved in an intersection collision with Don Cralle that brought out the red flag and sent Cralle off to the hospital for evaluation. Sawin got his car running again but ended up at the back of the field. Tommy Gapp and John Carlson started chasing leader Steve Peters. Peters won with John “Cowboy” Carlson in an unofficial second.

The 30 lap Mini Stock feature saw points leader Scott LaCross seeking to extend the points gap between himself and Michael Johnston. Johnston quickly moved up into the second position but LaCross was having trouble getting past Dave Ramey. His chance came in lap 12 when Ramey went wide. LaCross pushed ahead and quickly passed Johnston who had moved into first. The remainder of the race was spent with LaCross maintaining his lead and Johnston chasing. LaCross took his win. Johnston was second, Jaime Richardson third, Ramey fourth and Bob Edwards rounded out the field.

A B Main race preceded the A Main Randy’s Ring & Pinion Bombers feature. Mike Ebling had the checkered flag in the B Main with Mike Wallace following. The drivers earned the option to move up to the A Race. It was Frank Cowgill’s show almost from the beginning. Most eyes were on Bill Eddy and Sue Larson to see who would get to chase Cowgill. Dirk Kruiswyk never let Eddy or Larson get too far ahead and managed to pass both on lap 22. Larson held onto third for a while as Duane Schoesboek moved up to the fourth spot. The checkered flag was waved for Frank Cowgillas he won his first ever NASCAR bomber feature win. . Kruiswyk managed to grab second. Schoesboek was third with Larson and Naima Lang rounding out the field.

There were four dash races on Saturday. The Super Stocks dash went to Ron Fritzley. The Mini Stocks dash was won by Jaime Richardson. Frank Cowgill of Seattle won the Bomber dash. The F8 dash was taken by Doug Delfel. A special feature of the evening was a FEAR Race of Champions. The drivers were all past champions only. Greg Scott on the ten lap race.
