Orrville, OH --- It was “Old Timers Night” at Wayne County Speedway last Saturday evening and racefans were treated with a full night of thrills, chills and spills as new great-grandfather Rick “Fat Daddy” Bond of Mansfield, OH took his third feature win of the season at the Orrville, OH 3/8 mile clay oval on Donley Ford Night as Troy Anderson of Lodi, OH scored another Pure Stock win as did Sam Huffman of Apple Creek, OH in the Mini Stock feature while Frank Oriti won the Cruiser division’s Season Championship.
In clearly one of the more exciting and drama-packed Massillon Transmission Late Models main events this season Bond took the immediate lead at the drop of the green flag from his third starting slot with a relentless Chet Alexander glued to his bumper with fifth starting Jim Cushing powering into third by the fourth turn. With Alexander pulling up alongside Bond lap after lap, often taking the lead for nearly a full circuit on several occasions, Cushing and Mark Gardiner were mimicking Bond and Alexander’s side by side driving clinic within striking distance while tenth starting Eric “Spud” Myers began threading the needle through the field. By the eighth lap Bond had some semblance of control of the lead with Alexander hounding him in the high groove while Myers had slipped up into fourth place and mounted a challenge with Cushing.
A lap nine caution for a mid-pack, scattering five-car tangle closed the ranks. Upon the restart 13th starting George Lee, 17th starting Wayne Maffett, Jr., and 18th starting Don Gross had cracked the top ten while Gardiner made several daring moves in eventually futile attempts to take second from Alexander. By the 15th circuit Myers had moved into third to make it a three-way battle for the lead with Lee and Allan Baker running in unison for sixth. A lap 17 restart saw Bond, Alexander and Myers make a kamikaze assault on the third and fourth turns which resulted in Myers tagging Alexander and bring out a caution. With Myers sent to the tail Bond, Alexander, Gardiner, Lee, Baker and Gross set the pace with Gross turning the wick up and working his way into fourth by lap 23. A lap 24 caution waved when Lee, Gross and Baker tangled sending Baker to the tail and setting up a dash to the checkers with Maffett slipping into fourth and Bond holding on for the win in his Rod Eddleblute Garage/Hale’s Harley Davidson Carrera Shocks/Pro-Power Engines/GRT Race Cars #007 over Alexander, Gardiner, Maffett, Gross, Lee, Mark Osburn, Myers, Bellamy and Dreibelbis.
In the Thrifty Discount Muffler Pure Stocks once again it was Troy Anderson of Lodi, OH coming out on top of an action packed main event over Bob Daugherty, Rory reed, Jack Wile, Shawn Cains, Steve Schickler, Matt Emerling, Randy King, Rich Holmes and Chet Mullins. Winning the 1st B Main was Jason Skelly over Steve Skelly while Matt Emerling won the second B Main over Randy Pollock.
The Curly’s Auto Body Mini Stocks feature event was a wild and wooly affair with eventual winner Sam Huffman of Apple Creek, OH, a recent frequent visitor to victory lane, taking the win over Tom Ogle, Steve Lute, Jeremy Lucas, Jason Thiel, Willie Coblentz, Mike Snyder, Josh Robinson, Ron Miller and Roger Rush, Jr. Taking the B Main win was Snyder over Rush, Jr.
In the Smokeland Cruiser Season Championship event it was Frank Oriti, no stranger to victory lane, taking the top honors over Paul McVicker, Ed Carpenter, Mike Graber, Ed Brenneman, Chad Craver, Scott Butler, Justin Maffett, Chuck Clantz and Gerald Pyers. Taking the B Main win was Schumacher and Radcliff.
