STOCKTON, California -- Saturday night Stockton 99 Speedway closed out its 57th season by hosting the 2003 Cal State Open Comp Championships With drivers such as Jason Fensler, Eric Holmes, Mike David, Phil Perry and three time champ Harry Belletto, the stage was set for a great night of racing. The 2003 NASCAR Weekly Series Champion, Eric Schmidt of Roseville Ca. was there to take care of business. With the weekly series engine still in the #05 Chevy Monte Carlo, Golden State Racings crew added tour type brakes and shocks along with an 8 inch spoiler and some body modifications to the Western Late Model . Schmidt set fast time at 13.83 with 2nd quick going to Fensler with 13.90. The 125 lap Feature had Schmidt starting 4th and by lap five Schmidt took the lead from Fensler and ran away from the 20 car field. Schmidt set a furious but smooth pace having lapped up to sixth place by lap 54 when the 2nd of three cautions came out. Schmidt chose to take the restart on the outside of Fensler clearing him as they entered turn one. Running nose to tail for three laps, Schmidt began to pull away for good putting many lap cars between himself and Fensler. Leading for 120 laps, Schmidt lapped all drivers except Miller, Belletto and Fensler but had them in sight as He crossed the finish line and took $5000.00 pay day!
