Dale Quarterly slipped by Brad Leighton with three laps remaining in the Burnham Boilers 200 at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Conn., and went on to win the race.
Leighton held on to second place, finishing .506 of a second behind the winner. Andy Santerre, who clinched the 2003 championship a race earlier, finished third. Joey McCarthy and Mike Stefanik filled out the top five.
Quarterly averaged 69.759 mph over the course of the race. He also won the Bud Pole Award with a speed of 101.994 mph.
Santerre’s final championship margin was 206 points ahead of Stefanik. The top 15 finishers in the standings earn automatic invitations to NASCAR’s Shootout event at Irwindale, Calif., in November. They’ll race against the top 15 finishers in the NASCAR Winston West Series. The Winston West competitors still have two races remaining in their season.
Both the Winston West and Busch North series race exclusively on Goodyear tires.
The Busch North drivers finishing in the top 15 were: Andy Santerre, Mike Stefanik, Mike Johnson, Brian Hoar, Kelly Moore, Joey McCarthy, Dale Quarterly, Eddie McDonald, Mike Olsen, Matt Kobyluck, Ryan Moore, Bryon Chew, Dave Dion, Kip Stockwell and Mark Durgin.
The five-race post season championship series resumes Oct. 18 at Myrtle Beach Speedway in Myrtle Beach, S.C., with the Mark Brook Memorial Bi-Lo 250.
